How about the Navigon 40 or 70 Premium Live models as an alternative to the Garmin? They come with HD Live and TMC - i think you can switch between them. They also allow 2 simultaneous hands-free Bluetooth connections, useful if you have a works phone and a personal one.

I was going to buy one and run it side-by-side with my 540 Live while my Live subscription is still current. But then there was an announcement from Navigon saying they have a major software release in September (not sure if it is a new device too). So I'm now waiting until that is available before giving it as shot.

The Live option appears to only be in some other EU countries, and not the UK.

I can't see where they are getting the data from. I do like the traffic cameras though!

Garmin state

The nüLink! 2390 brings top-end live navigation features with new Garmin 3D traffic which consults over 80 million expert traffic sources across Europe to ensure the best traffic avoidance and live traffic information available

Oh NOOOOOO!!! Now you've just about put me off Garmin - I've heard that sort of stuff for the last few years from TomTom - "Millions of users putting the maps right, Millions of users putting the Traffic right."

If it would say that it used some specific source (like TrafficMaster), I'd be happy, but using "radio reports"? You mean that someone is sitting listening to all the radio reports in an area and typing them in? I'll keep the TomTom HD if that's how good it's going to be.

I think I read somewhere that the TomTom SIM card stuff would be patented, and so not repeatable. Unless of course you pay TomTom for the data, which anyone could do if the price is right.

That said, I don't know where Google get their traffic data from, but it seems reasonably current.

Don't forget pottsy's original comparison where the Garmin traffic data was hopelessly inaccurate.

Pottsy's original comparison was between TT 750 and 1005. See opening post

Bit of lateral thinking - he meant the original comparison here.

I've just had this from TT via Facebook -

TomTom wrote: "Hi keith, quick update – we’re currently having management meetings to define the fastest and best solution. Needless to say, we need to implement something that doesn’t create more problems down the line. Our first action will be to increase the range from the current 80km to 120km. Going directly back to the original 160km range is not feasible (for now) due to the much greater detail and volume of incidents we now provide with HD Traffic 5.0 and multiple new data sources. We are currently testing this increase to 120km and if all goes well it will be live on Thursday afternoon (4th August). We are, of course, also investigating other medium and long-term improvements."

Do you notice how they are now describing a partial return to what we have already paid for as "an improvement" - on Thursday night they'll be crowing about "New improved HD Traffic!" My head will feel a lot better when I stop banging it against this wall. Rolling Eyes
