Fugawi is always behind current location

I've just got myself a copy of Fugawi UK and I'm trying to use it with the Tom Tom wired GPS receiver (the diamond shaped one - is that the 'mouse'?) on an iPAQ 2210.

There doesn't appear to be any way to configure the receiver to make sure it's using NMEA 0183 v2 and WGS84 datum, but I turned it on, went out for a drive and it worked!

The problem I have is that the current location shown on the map can be anything up to 2 minutes out of date. When I set off, the location on the map doesn't move for a while, then it starts and it's always up to a mile or two behind me, then after I stop the map location carries on until it catches up with my real location. As you can imagine, this makes it pretty useless as a navigation tool. Once it catches up, it's accurate. The Tom Tom Navigator software is accurate in real time when I use that.

Has anybody else seen this problem or know how to fix it?

we've seen some cases where the SiRF protocol has caused some delays. Can you confirm you run the mouse on NMEA protocol at 4800 ?

It's very difficult to find out any information about the protocol and rate for the mouse as there are no settings to see in Tom Tom, nor in the GPS Info app that comes with it. The hardware specifications for the GPS don't mention protocol or baud rate either.

After installing Win Fast Navigator, I can finally confirm it is using NMEA at 4800 baud (WinFast automatically picked up those settings).

After playing around some more, I've noticed the timeliness of the current location seems to differ depending on how far I have zoomed in on the map, so I assume it's a bug within Fugawi rather than incorrect connection settings.

Given that I can't easliy export the OS maps to a format useable by Ozi Explorer (which I also have), Fugawi UK has been pretty much a waste of money.

Does anyone else use Fugawi UK with the Tom Tom mouse?

I can't comment on PocketPC, but Fugawi for Palm is ghastly slow. In fact, so slow and crappy that I uninstalled it completely and bought PathAway instead. It's just a poor product, and I go to great lengths to tell that to everyone that I can.

It was on a Tungsten T-2, which has a 166 mHz processor, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Not helpful to you maybe, but hopefully to others who might be thinking about buying it to use on a handheld.

Read this thread with interest as I was having the same problem. However I was sure that I had seen a much faster if not instantaneous response in the past. Found that by deleting all waypoints, this fast response returned. Also noticed that the location circle flashes much faster. I suppose the next step is to find out how many waypoints gives an acceptable delay.
