Both my father and I puchased SPIIIs around Jan 2003, they both work great except for one little feature and it happens on both units. They seem to be overheating, my dads seems to be worse than mine especially since it was returned from the garmin for repair ($225). It works fine for the first hour or so, then it starts randomly pressing the left arrow key. so the white arrow pops up on the screen and the map stops moving. If you bring up a menu with tabs it will sit and scroll through the tabs repeatedly. The warmer it gets the more frequent, right now I am sitting next to it and it is happening at least once per second or more. This basically makes it completely useless. He sent it in for repair noting this problem as well as the fact it didn't work on battery power. They fixed the battery problem and ignored the other problem. Mine exhibits the same symptoms but the button presses are less frequent on mine for some reason. I am guessing at it being an overheat issue due to the fact it takes a while to start happening, and mine never did it until I placed it on my dashboard such that the sun was hitting it. Any ideas/suggestions appreciated. I contacted their tech support and they never acknowledged my question (I had been emailing about a question on bluechart and when I asked them that question they never replied, interesting...).
