Not sure what the stigma is with Eastern Europe nowadays, unless you still hark back to a different era. The HP Elitebook top of the range laptop I bought before Christmas was made in the Czech Republic. Many good cars are now made in Eastern Europe. And their website works fine for me (so therefore should work in the rest of the world).

As it just happens Sygic uses the same map supplier as TT (and if I remember rightly is owned by TT) so it is fine for Europe and USA. And if you want the nearest thing to a Tom Tom experience on Android (or Windows Mobile) then it has to be Sygic. It has the closest you will get to the TT layout and menu system.

If you are looking for a large screen then you could buy an ipad and put TT on it - the version made for the iphone works fine on it. Or you could see what pads are available with Android.

Hm, looks like TomTom is dying/dead. Shame.

I wonder whether there's a newer large-screen device I could run it on (maybe Android) that's not a phone and rather cheap? Something that I could buy a dock for the car. I've so enjoyed my docked iPaq with TomTom the past five years.

I've been a TomTom PDA user from 2003 also and upgraded through the versions. TomTom is dead to the PDA market which I can only put down to the amount of piracy that went on.

They seem to happily churn out new all-in-one devices and develop for devices they can control a lot more cleverly (iphone etc) but it doesn't help us PDA users.

While I still have my iPaq in a box somewhere I joined the smartphone revolution a couple of years ago, and although my software is quite old TomTom7 and I don't get all the nice features such as Lane Guidance and IQ routes etc it works, I can still update my maps and the traffic subscription is now very accurate (I guess thanks to the HD Traffic they offer for other devices).

Do you use your PDA for anything other than Satnav though? If not then the All-In-One devices are surely just that?

However if you do go down the Android route you might as well get the phone with it but you won't be able to use TomTom with Android.

IPad is too large. The 4700 was fine, but it is so old and subject to breakage. A device with a 5.2" screen would be nice.

Looks to me like TomTom is dying because their maps are so out of date. I don't need a phone in my satnav unit, and that would needlessly increase the cost. For five years I've had the 4700 mounted on my dash in front of the tach in a Brodit mount, and I wish I could stay with that. I have Copilot on my NexusOne ('Google') phone, and am using it all the time now that my iPaq is dead, but I often have to make a call while navigating and I often get lost that way.

The all-in-one devices are all completely bass-ackwards, AFAIC. You are driving forward, right? And you need to know what's out ahead, right? So why in the Hell is every single all-in-one device turned sideways? Just asking, are they retarded? Or sheep? Useless.

I guess I don't need a complete TomTom experience. Sygic is looking kind of expensive at E30, considering that I got Copilot for my Android for $2.95 . (Thanksgiving special) Do not like Copilot, but it does get me there. I particularly miss being able to zoom out to see the whole route instantly. Copilot is a limited PITA with a too-authoritative female voice.

v7 is the latest PPC software for use in Europe, I am not too sure that version or the newer maps were ever released for PPC in North America - Mike

I am not sure what you are referring to. Are you referring to the Version 8.60 of the TT Maps for TT7 I referred to in a previous post? If so then, as I said in that post, they can be bought and downloaded from TT's website.

However if you are looking for maps of the USA then it appears you are out of luck. For reasons known only to themselves TT do not list any maps of the USA or Canada for use with TT7.
