Try contacting Tfl directly. All I could find was this article from their website and it states "The system should be fully operational by the summer". Rolling Eyes

If they have got them there, they wont catch anyone with the amount of traffic crawling along there in the last few weeks!!!

They would have been better putting them on the North Circular to & from the Beckton Roundabout.

Quote:
Transport for London (TfL) is writing to make you aware of the introduction of average speed cameras on the A13 between the Canning Town flyover and the Goresbrook interchange.

This stretch of road has a collision rate that is higher than the average collision per km on TfL's Red Routes. Between 2007 and 2009, there were 426 collisions on this stretch; resulting in two deaths and 37 serious casualties.

In agreement with the Metropolitan Police the cameras will begin enforcing on the 31st Jan 2011. Once enforcement commences, the speed limit on much of this stretch of the A13 will be increased from 40mph to 50mph. The speed limits across the Lodge Avenue and Canning Town flyovers will remain at the current speed limits for safety reasons (40mph and 30mph respectively).

TfL will be increasing the speed limit following a review of the dual three lane design of the A13, which showed that a 50mph speed limit is appropriate for this stretch of road. As well as reducing the number of people killed or harmed on the road, it is also hoped this system will reduce congestion caused by collisions, helping to further smooth traffic flow.

Road collisions are responsible for around 28 per cent of congestion in London. Collisions along the stretch of A13 from Canning Town flyover to Goresbrook Interchange can take up to seven hours to be cleared, with the average time being around two hours per collision.

TfL contractors are currently working to amend signage and alter road markings to reflect the change. The new speed limits will then become enforced by the Average Speed Camera system. Other road safety engineering measures, including amendments to the layout of the carriageway markings, new signage and improvements to street lighting have also been implemented on the 11.8km stretch of road to further reduce collisions.

The existing speed cameras on this stretch of road will be switched off once the average speed system goes live and removed as soon as practicable. The new system will be signed so that drivers are fully aware of the speed limits and that they are being enforced using average speed cameras.

The linked article states:

Quote:
In the three years ending December 2009, the total number of collisions along the 11.8km of A13 between Canning Town and Goresbrook Interchange was 426, giving a rate of 36 collisions per km during the three year period. This compares to 19,778 collisions along the 580km of TfL's road network, which gives a collision rate of 34 collisions per kilometre during the same period

I wonder what the proper statistics are. 36 versus 34 may well be within the standard deviation/standard error for the statistic given, and comparing like for like - dual carriageways only, in other words - may show that the road concerned is no better or no worse than any other similar road.

Still, at least the cameras will now enforce the speed most people feel comfortable driving at along that stretch of road - outside the rush hour, that is, which is the period when, in my experience, most collisions happen and when average traffic speeds are anywhere between stationary and crawling...
