I'm looking for a solution suitable for in-car and marine use (UK). I see that the Tungsten E and kirrio bundle is very good value at the moment (about £300). I also like the look of the Palm products mainly because of the better screen resolution.

I wonder what would be needed to get this working for marine use?

Can anybody tell me:

a) Is there any chance to get marine charts which would work with the ViaMichelin Mapsonic software included in the bundle?

b) In case a) above is No, then what software could I add for the Palm which would use the GPS with marine charts? For example, will software like Fugawi or Maptech work with this combination?

c) Am I barking up the wrong tree. Should I be thinking about a pocket PC solution or ???

Thanks - Paul

The Mapsonic software will not use Marine charts. If you require this you need to use Fugawi and purchase Maptech BSB maps. If you are sailing in the USA then you will also have the option of using Maptech Outdoor Navigator for the marine charts.

The Pocket PC offers many more options for both Street Navigation and Marine Charting applications.

Hi Mike, thanks for the advice. I decided to go for a Tungsten T2. I was able to connect it to my Garmin GPS12 by making up a serial cable. I found some low cost navigation software and charts from an Italian web site called sailplan http://www.sw-n.com. This did a nice job of giving me cockpit electronic navigation at an amazingly low price compared to a full-blown chartplotter and charts.

The charts and software are a bit basic but they were just what I was looking for. As long as you use it strictly as a backup for paper charts it can give you very quick info such as whether you are steering the right course (tide compensation), time to destination, quick identification of landmarks and lights etc.

Buying the T2 also gives me the chance to upgrade to a bluetooth GPS at any time.

Next job on the list is to find some low-ish cost land navigation software for the Palm.

Cheers
