Editted to correct my definition of "Total Time"
I originally posted on an aspect of this last month.

Since upgrading to v1.42 I've been looking at the behaviour of the Trip Log and how it varies during periods when the Log is Started & Stopped.

Each time I switched from Start to Stop or vice-versa I've taken a screenshot - to capture the Trip-Log readings and obtain an accurate timestamp from the JPEG filename.

From these screenshots it is apparent that some of the logged values are not what I had expected. Specifically -
1) Total Time = Duration since last reset whilst Trip Log is 'Started'

2) When Trip-Log is Stopped, changes in distance and elevation continue to be logged. Only "Total Time" & "Time Moving" remain unchanged.

Hence all the derived values (eg "Av Speed" & "Av Moving") continue to be updated - which results in the sort of unusual values recently reported by Gibbo10.
("Av Speed" = "Total Dist"/"Total Time")

I had assumed from it's name that -
"Total Time" = time elapsed since latest Trip Reset

IMO, if defined like this, it would make "Av Speed" value more meaningful and be much easier to view the "Av speed" and mentally estimate the likely total duration of your route.
(I'm not a fan of SatMap's ETA calculations - which rely on you setting a good estimated ground speed in advance.)

Am I the only user who finds these Trip-Log readings unsatisfactory?

Don't know about the trip logs, but how on earth else would it calculate an ETA without knowing how fast you travel? Very Happy

I may have misinterpreted your post, but I think what Gwyver is saying, and I agree,is that on the Satmap you have to input your own estimated speed ( 4mph for walking say or 15mph for cycling ) before you set out.

Other GPS's,my Garmin for example, don't require this and your speed is worked out by the unit itself from the satellite data.

Aha, I see. Thanks for the info. I suppose then that the 'others' just have a 'guess' to start with, then correct the speed and thus ETA 'as you go'?

Just purchased unit & upgraded to v 1.4 before use. When I start my trip log the "total time" does not start to count, one or 2 seconds appear to randomly be added but it is not a record of anything between Start and stop trip log. Had a chat with satmap technical & reset everything & reinstalled update but no change, with suggestion I need to be moving to get reading. I would expect "total time" running all the time the trip is in green arrow (rather than red =) mode. (N.B trip distance records correctly)Any thoughts?

I've tested my unit tonight as I've not experienced your problem.

Firstly you will need a lock on to the satellite either green or blue signal top left of the screen. I assume that you have done this as you have mentioned the green arrow which you will only get if you are locked to the satellite.

Once I have lock on and start the trip log it starts to record the total time as you would expect it too.

I notice that you mentioned in your post that 1 or 2 seconds appear randomly, I think this may be where you are miss reading the trip log as the total time in the trip log records in hours and minutes not seconds. Therefore the 1 or 2 seconds that are appearing are actually 1 or 2 minutes and I suspect if you leave it longer and time the interval that will confirm it to be the case.

Hope this helps.

Good luck with your new satmap.

Yes, I've been mis reading the minutes for seconds, I think I did have a problem at first but after re installing v1.4 it was fixed, I'm used to my garmin counting in seconds and had thought I was looking @ random seconds. It is certainly working now. Many thanks
