Battery intermittently charging,is it the mount or the unit?

I have recently been having a few problems with the battery side of things with my TT910. Until about 6 months ago the battery was fine.

Now when I connect the charger to it the green light comes on but the the charging word does not appear.

If I move the unit and mount the charging word appear and thus charges.
I managed to charge the battery last night and it has around 3/4 battery after being left on for around 1 hour today.

the car mount and unit when joined does have quite a bit of play. so.....

is it the car mount of the unit?

It sounds very much like a "dry joint" on the PCB. I had the same symptoms on my first 910. In the car I also got the "Shutting Down in 10 secs" Screen every few seconds.

I've found where I think the problem is (in my case), but haven't had a chance to finish the job and re-assemble the unit yet to be able to test it for real.

My dry joint is on the mount connector where the pad should be soldered to the PCB.

There has always been quite a bit of play on the screen mounts, and it doesn't seem to be a problem with the other 910.

Basically, it wasn't a very good design, so even without an actual fault like Oldboy describes, there were often charging issues with the x10 models.

There should be a rubber "bung" on the base of the Go, but sometimes that bung goes missing and that can make the connection worse/more intermittent.

However, some people have found that removing the bung improves the connection!

I have that rubber bung on the back of the Go unit. I guess its comes out somewhere. Maybe have to have a look.

With the Dry point, what should i be looking for? I have Torx and dont mind getting my hands dirty.

There are some details on taking a 910 appart in This Thread. Bear in mind the problem could also be within the mount as thats also got a PCB within it.
In addition the PC Dock charger connector is known to be a loose connection between the mains powered charger and where it plugs in to the cradle - Mike

Ok, so I think that I have found the problem.

Its because I dont have the rubber bung in the back. Having said that I have tried to make my own bung but this is not consistent in the slightest because the mount really needs to be pushed in hard to the unit.

I dont suppose Tom Tom have the bungs to buys from them do they?

If not what else can I do?

Yep, I have this problem. Because the TomTom has a bit of 'slack' when in the cradle, the green light is always on, but sometimes it does not charge.

I imagine that the bung holds the TomTom fast onto the cradle, which is why it works.

I haven't got a bung. I don't think making one is viable. However... I have done something else.

Cut out a small rectangle of resonably dense, but not completley solid fabric - something which is not too soft, but has a bit of give - which is about 1.5mm thick (I used initially a foam strap thing of an old iPod running case, and then a bit of a 'fake' Chamois from Halfords, but I imagine a bit of bicycle innertube would be ideal).

On my dock there are the dock connections then a 'ridge' and then a semi-circle dip.

Align the 'pad' which you have just made so it sitting in that dip.

Tape it down.

Now when I put the TomTom in it is held in the position where it charges and 90% of the slack is taken up.

I reckon instead of pad you could probably get away with a bit of blue tac.

Try it and let me know if it works for you!
