Just a little reminder for the guys and gals at TT and Tele Atlas ..... we're having a new toll road - just next to the M6, you won't be able to miss it.

Any chance of penciling it in to the 2015 update?

If GO has the M6 Toll, it must surely be using the same map data as TT3, so why hasn't TT3 got the M6 Toll ?

Do you mean the one that's been open for nearly a year or the one which I saw announced yesterday? Question

Go doesn't use the same data. I think that TT3 is based on 2003 Q3 data and Go is based in 2004 Q1 but I stand to be corrected.

Yes, GO is using a newer data map-set compared to TTN3 in Europe.

It pees me off a bit that I bought maps of Western Europe last week and I do not get up to date data. I think a quaestion to Tomtom preparing for a free upgrade is in order here.

Got a reply from TomTom saying that maps of Western Europe are not available for Tomtom GO and that they do not plan any map upgrades for TT for Palm OS at this time.

Are the TomTom Go map files in the same format as TomTom V3, if so they could be used and the toll road data made available.

Mmmmh before we all get excited, I'm aware of the copyright issues etc, but at some point TomTom will update their master TomTom V3 CDROM to include the latest versions of their software, they may include updated map files. Let hope, I'm still waiting for my upgrade to arrive.

The maps use the same data format for TT3, TT4Palm and TTGO. Having said that if you copy the maps they will not work as they need activation for the device they are being used on.

I would very much doubt that TomTom will update the maps for TT3. The only reason I think they would do this is if they have to do a mass recall and re-release of the software. After this long in the field I dont see it happening. I suspect that we will have to wait for TT4 for the latest map data.

This answer is not based on any form of inside knowledge, just observation of the way things have worked in the past with TomTom.

If as you say they all use the same data, it shouldn't be that difficult for TT to release an updated version of the UK maps as a downloadable file against your activation code.

But what would they release?

94Mb for the whole UK,
64Mb covering M6,
32Mb or 16Mb sections.

The bandwidth required for everyone to download these maps would be prohibitivly expensive.

Given that they could do this even so there would still be some roads that are not in the GO maps that would be in the latest release of the maps.

There has to be a point where you release a product, for TomTom it is unfortunate that the M6 Toll was not available at the time they cut the maps for TT3 and TT for Palm.

Online backup services use a technique called "delta blocking" which is able to distinguish exactly which bits of a file have changed so that you don't have to upload the whole file to make an incremental backup. Surely this technique could be applied so that the download was only a few Mb at most.

MikeB wrote:

Even if delta blocking can't be used, surely in these days of cheaper bandwidth TomTom could afford to offer up the entire files for download. They must have enough customers to justify it or else the bandwidth wouldn't be an issue.

Of course there's always a cut-off point for the data. It is TomTom's responsibility to ensure there is as little lag as possible between road changes (especially major ones) and the map data being available.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I would be happy to pay a small charge for quarterly map updates.
