Thank you for the link, it does seem to be a good utility. I used it to delete the unwanted columns and the rows with no lat or long coordinates, then changed the layout of the columns. Now the file is down to 58Mb as a CSV file in a format:
Longitude,Latitude,Name(Postcode),Details(blank)
Next step is to convert it to a Tomtom ov2 file.

You could leave the Details column out, but the OV2 file will be about 56+MB and the "GOs" will take quite a time to search it.

Even with it split into approx 6MB chunks it takes several seconds to get a "hit".

Hi All
Where I think this would be usefull is withing autoroute & Google earth
manys the time you know where your going! but dont know how to put a postcode too it and lets face it it's the easiest way of inputing to satnav's
just be nice if you point to the spot you need to go and up pops nearest post code for you.

Anyway throw it up in the air and lets see what you think?

Both programs already have this built-in. Wink

I don't have the data converted to an ov2 file yet. My computer is busy compiling openstreetmap maps for use with we-travel software on my mobile phone.

I have been following the comments about this postcode data on the wikileaks web site. I am now almost certain that it is the Royal Mail's Postzon database, see here. If it does prove to be this data then the Royal Mail hold the copyright and I will delete it from my system.

I make my living from writing software and am entirely opposed to copyright theft.

Edit: It appears that PocketGPSWorld have removed the link to the wikileaks web site from the opening post in this thread. Does this indicate that Darren is also concerned about the copyright of the data now?

I have taken on-board some of the comments made here by NickG. Whilst reporting the 'leak' is something I think was justified, posting the direct link was on reflection unwise.

If it transpires that the database is indeed RM's then we will treat it as we would any other pirated data/software subject.

Regardless, any requests in the forums for a converted file from the original data or offers of a converted file are not acceptable and we would have to take action against any such posts.

So if you have the file, consider the copyright implications and if you don't, please don't ask for it or converted versions of it in these forums.

They have built in search but thats not my point, if you want the post code of where you are say looking at, then it only shows the first 4 digits by pointing at the road side,I have sorted a cvs file for my area and imported it into Autoroute, and if you pick the nearest icon to where you want the postcode it displays the full postcode only col. 1,14,15 required. useful if you are organising a walk for others attending to give them a postcode close to start.(Not found a way to get it into Google Earth)

Use PoiEdit to Open the CSV File, then Save as ..., and select Google Earth (*.kml).

In Windows Explorer Double Click the kml File and Google Earth will open with the Locations in place, and listed under Temporary Places.

When you Exit Google you have the option to Save these new locations under My Places, for use in the future.

try a semi-colon on the header row to 'hide' that row? eg: ;latitude, longitude, details

a 'floating point value' means, essentially, a number with a decimal point maybe it is reading the text thinking it is a number and failing. so by adding the semi-colon you will tell the software to ignore that line

o/k and thanks for taking the trouble to try and solve My problem of the floating point. I have tried the method as you say of placing a semicolon in front of the line but its still complaining that its not a valid point. could there be some hidden chars. on the line I cannot see?

In the File Open Error Pop Up, can you see, at the bottom, "Try with following format: Navman Comma Seperated?

If you can, what happens when you Click OK?
