Hi all,

As a new user to the site, I thought I would illicit some thoughts Smile

I've just ordered a new iPaq 5550 from TotalPDA and would like some GPS hardware/software to go with it, but first I have a few questions...

1) Is the gps hardware from one manufacturer more or less compatible with the software from another? i.e. If I buy some TomTom kit today, will I be able to use some other routing system in a years time when new maps come out?

2) I really like the thought of a GPS system with TMC (The free to air system, not GPRS) and have read the excellent review of the Navigon system. Is this the only system out there that does this?

Any help would be appreciated :D

Yes, most hardware is cross software compatible, the thing to look for is NMEA compatability in a GPS receiver, this is the de facto standard these days and the vast majority of software will accept input from one of these.

As fdor TMC, currently Navigon are the only one's offering TMC via an FM receiver built into a customised GPS receiver. TomTom offer TMC service via a subscription and you need a GPRS Cell Phone hooked up to your PDA to receive this.

No, 99.9999999998% of GPS Receivers do not support TMC.

Thats good. Does the technology behind the GPS receiver change much?
I like the idea of the Navigon GPS, in that you can add TMC/Bluetooth as seperate modules later on, but would I just replace it in 1-2 years time when new software comes out?

Looks like the Navigon is the best option for me then. Does anyone else sell it other than Navigon in Germany?

Thanks for the help Smile
