I know this might be an old chestnut, but bear with me, please. I'm new to Garmin, having using TomTom on a Pocket PC for a few years. I've got a new Nuvi 250 and am making the transition. I think I've just about sorted out route planning now, apart from a couple of issues. My procedure is:
- Switch GPS off, by switching Simulator on (how perverse is that?)
- Use "Where To" to find my Start position, press "Map" and "Set Location".
- Use "Where To" to set my final destination, then press "Go".
- Say No when asked if I want to simulate driving the route.
- Then press green bar at top of screen, then "Show Map".
- This gives 2d map of total route, with distance.....
..but it does not always show the Time of the journey. Can't work out why it sometimes does, but usually doesn't. Any insights?

If I do accept the offer of simulating the driving of the route, then I do get the distance and time shown on the overall route map, but of course the distance and time immediately start reducing as the simulation proceeds. And there doesn't seem to be a way of stopping the simulation...

Oh, and another thing. I also can add many Via points by this approach, but don't seem to be able to control the sequence that the route planner visits the different Vias. It seems to do it using some simple algorithm which minimises overall distance, which I suppose is fine for practical purposes. I've no idea how Vias can be removed from the route.

Am I missing a trick, or is that how to do route planning?
Thx, Steve

To get the total jouney time use the down arrow at the bottom right to scroll to the last instrcution. It'll show the total journey time.

To stop the simulation, tap on the screen and press Stop.

If you add Vias then they'll be calculated in the order you add them. You can't remove them once they have been added without scrapping the route and starting again. To get the flexibilty you want you need a unit that supports Routes. Sadly the 250 doesn't support this.

Paul - thanks for reply.

Yes, this works if the route duration has been calculated. In which case it is also shown correctly on the map view as well. But what I am saying is that sometimes when I plan a route, the time is properly calculated and sometimes it is not, and I can't work out what is influencing that.

This does not stop it on my device (Nuvi250 with 5.00 SW)

Not true on mine. Whatever order I add the Vias, they are routed in a sensible order, presumably based on minimising the overall route duration.

Agreed, but I can live with that. I rarely would plan a route with more than a couple of Vias in it.
So, all in all, I am very happy with the Garmin's use of Vias. It's just the hit a miss issue with calculating route durations that annoys me. Ah, well.

Have you got any specific examples where this happens?

Sorry, should have been tap "Menu" and tap "Stop". Works on my 760 & 765...

You are right. Same here. I was sure in the past it worked on the order you entered them in...

As for the total journey time, I'm not sure which way you are doing it, but if you bring up the list of turns and tap one, then scroll to the bottom of the list it should give the journey time. Even the main screen should show the time of arrival / journey time.

Are you sure when you calculate the journeys you have a good strong signal? If the unit hasn't got signal (Or if the GPS Simulator is Off) it might affect it's ability to provide an arrival time..

Paul, thanks for your help on this. Just to be clear, all the route planning I was talking about was with the GPS Simulator switched on, so that the signal strength is not an issue. And yes, I do have some screen shots showing a planned route, with just a couple of hyphens on the bottom right, where the distance should. Not sure how to post them though..?

But it seems now that this only happens occasionally, so I'll learn to ignore it, and redo the plan if necessary. Got to get on with life!

On stopping the Simulation, I see now what you mean. But that, of course clears the route. I was thinking there should be a way just to stop the simulation without clearing the route. But that's no big deal either, really.

So now I understand the Garmin better, I see that it can do a few TomTom-like things which I didn't realise at first. All in all, pretty happy with it.
Steve
