I expect everybody except me knows this, but...............

Turned on the C710 for the first time after the change to BST to find it was an hour slow. Remembering the old dodge of booting in unlocked mode and setting the clock and DST there, could I remember *how* to boot in unlocked mode? No. :-)

I knew it was two buttons and a paperclip but *which* two buttons? Trying with the sound up/down pair I got what, if it was a Telly, would be called an "engineering" menu. White letters on a blue screen and I had to turn the C710 through 90 degrees to read it. Was too scared to try anything in case I "bricked" it - but interesting. Of course the correct buttons are the two centre ones.

It's the firmware flash screen. I couldn't remember how to get to that screen and have never had any use for it. Actually, it never was used. Despite being firmware flashable the C710 never did see an update to the buggy firmware that came bundled with the early versions. Some later versions had an updated firmware but there was no updated available for the earlier onesdespite the hardware being identical.

The US C310s were firmware updated in this way as part of a free map upgrade process - the map security check and license files are tied to firmware data and only a flash update can allow newer maps to be used from the device internal memory.
