Couldn't find anything on this after searching the forums so .....

Just got a sim card from asda mobile and the data charge is just 20p per MB.
That's 20 x cheaper than my last payg network charge Shocked

Had it hooked up to my Go520 using a nokia 6310i and all seems well using the free months traffic sub tomtom helpdesk gave me.

Only thing I'm not sure about is it only downloads data within a radius of my location and not the whole country but it does this when connected through the home software as well so I'm guessing that's how it is supposed to work Question

That's amazing and their voice/text charge is cheap too. Also they use the Vodaphone network. I've just ordered a SIM card at 49p.

It doesn't mention any limitations in their terms and conditions. What is the point of GPRS within a radius of your location? Barking if it is true but I doubt it.

Do you know if you can use it abroad?

Thanks for the tip.

I am due to get a nokia 5800 at work but dont know if it will work with my 530. For that price I can just use my personal 6230 as it will cost me just over £1 a month! Beats the crappy £20 it would cost me on orange.

It's the TomTom that only downloads traffic data for your area to reduce the size of the download. The GPRS is controlled by the network cover.

RDS-TMC Traffic is regional

HD Live Traffic covers a large area but not full country

GPRS Traffic used to offer full country coverage but I haven't used it for a while. So it would appear this has changed recently.

As long as you can drive for at least two hours in any direction with traffic data you won't have an issue, even RDS-TMC can offer this - Mike

That's interesting. I asked because I used to run Navigator 5 on a PDA and I'm sure it used to download the full UK coverage.
Is this something they changed at some point?

Saying this When in Dumfries last week it showed traffic down to Leeds and while in Folkestone showed traffic up to Leicester so maybe 150 to 200 mile radius? Probably good enough for long range planning.

Gblades, no problem. Was surprised it hadn't been posted already.

You can also pick the sims up from an Asda store if you have one nearby.

Just checked out the call and SMS charges (PAYG) in the EU and some of the Balkans and they are MUCH cheaper than other networks. 35p per min for example in all te EU countries including calling home. Cross border ie outside EU to say Russia is £1.40 per minute so you have to have a price list handy.

Not much consolation, but Orange France let you have 0.5GB (yes 500MB) for a 9 euro on a PAYG SIM! If only one of the UK operators would match that.

Are these ASDA Mobile SIM Cards 2G (GSM) or 3G if used in a 3G phone?

I currently have a Nokia N95 Connected to my 540 works fine, tried today with my new 5800 and no go, the 540 finds the phone and synces with it, but then goes into a loop of connecting and disconnecting, I have not been able to find any way around it so far which is a shame as the 5800 is a great phone.
