Hi
Just bought one of these to replace a Sony U50 and very disappointed with the mapping information.
Assuming this is the latest version of their maps I have compared some known destinations and find my 3 year old Sony maps are more up to date than these.
I realise that the very latest road changes will not be reflect immediately but alteration going back 3/4 years should be reflected by now. My place of work, it has existed for 4 years, allows the selection of the correct post code and then goes on to state 'No route found'.
The POI are pretty useless. e.g. its states my nearest fuel is 1 mile away when just 400 yards down the road there is a Sainsbury’s, this has been there since 1993. For the nearest MacDonald’s it takes me to some waste ground half a mile from the actual location.
While these local ‘inconsistencies’ are not important as finding my way around is not an issue, I am more concerned if this is a reflection of the overall maps and what will happen as I need to travel extensively to unknown areas.
I have contacted TT and they replied very quickly with a page of waffle.
Has anyone else experienced similar map issues.

there are basically 2 mapping companies which supply all the mapping information for SatNav devices - TeleAtlas and Navteq. TomTom uses TeleAtlas (as does Google maps). The general feeling is that both companies are quite a way behind, but often one is better than the other in a particular geographical location.
As for POIs, yes, it's generally accepted that TomTom's own aren't very good. Try downloading the POIs from this site (see the menu item at the top of the page), which are maintained and updated by the community - a lot of them are much better than the TomTom variety! |

Thanks for that.
Should I just dump the TT POI's and load the GPS one's or keep both. I don't believe thay take up much space but I dont want to clutter up the device with lots of data.
Cheers

All the TomTom POI locations are stored within a single file named POI.dat it resides in the map folder, you can either leave this where it is or remove it - your choice.
Additional POI files such as the quality ones free from this site comprise of two files:
The ov2 file which contains the location data
The bmp file which is the icon displayed on the device.
These files are also added to the map folder, there is a limit to the number of Custom POI categories you can add to the device, typically between 100 and 160 depending upon the device. Each category can contain thousands of individual locations - Mike |

Thank you Mike.
Once again I am indebted to you for your expert advice.
Incidentally, the handbook for this device implies that it has a PIN code feature. I don't seem to be able to locate it; any ideas.

The device does indeed have the PIN capablity, if you go to Change Preferences/ Set Owner you will see this screen:
To Set the PIN number you need the device connected to the PC and use the TomTom Home software following the instructions on the above screen capture should sort you out - Mike |

I personally do not like using the PIN number as when you are driving along and the unit reboots (it shouldn't but it does happen occasionally), you are approaching a busy junction and whilst normally the unit would resume, it now starts asking you to enter a PIN. That is something you do not want to do at this moment.
I don't view the added security from the PIN as any form of theft deterrent (others will disagree) and my Home (I use the end of my cul-de-sac) and other favourites information are not precise enough to be of any use to anyone who obtains my unit. _________________ Drivelux |
