A few years back I did some low bridge poi's. Can still be found on my web site by clicking my sig at the bottom of this post (on the poi files page).

But, I contacted 40 to 50 Councils out of the 100's that you need to contact to get this information, some sent it, but most said it was not available to the public without charging for it. Prices ranged from £20 to over £150 for admin charges.

So I would be very careful what you purchase on-line without seeing some proper proof that the data supplied is good for the whole of the U.K., and not just a few areas.

I have seen the the address shown on that web site some time ago for what gps product I can't remember, but it was also a different web site.

If your research was before 1st January 2005 and you're still interested in obtaining the information you could try asking again under the Freedom of Information Act. Unless local authorities have decided on a particular charge in advance they must provide it free (apart from disbursement costs like photocopying & postage) if the cost is less than £450.

I used FoIA to obtain the information for my Motorhome Parking web site.

It would be nice to hear more detail than just - 'avoid it'.

Is it using stolen information?
Does it not work?
Is there a better alternative?

I'm not the doubtless aggrieved author of the original work but you can draw your own conclusions

Most probably but that's not the point. Download free files from here instead.

Well said Darren.

Ive never come across this Amngps4 site before.

The bridge POI is very good ( with some cross-ref co-ords Rolling Eyes ), got a couple I dont have, so may I suggest RoyC & co. give it ago.

Just out of interest Darren, do you know if that database last updated sept 05 as the file date suggest!?

Cheers

I must confess to being a tad confused by all this.

As I understand it our member has allegedly been ripped off by TomTom ( from his sig) and by the authors at HGVSolutions ( ref Darren).

None of us would condone someone alse making money out of his work but does this mean that the original author is offering the same solution to HGV routing? That isn't clear to me from his website. If it is true I would happily use the original if it is truly supported and provides the same solution. If on the other hand someone has 'built on' that solution to create a better product , for which there is no competition then it makes things more difficult.

Has our member tried to use the legal process? Has he tried to negotiate a deal with HGVSolutions? It would seem to me that HGVSolutions can only gain by getting respectable, and our member can only gain by his work being recognised.

As I said, I am confused, and maybe these are not the facts but since we are meant to assume quite a lot in this thread I can only make assumptions. Please just tell us the facts.

I haven't said the data offered by HGVSolutions came from member pocketgps?

I have however had experience of the company offering this solution and hence my advice for caution. I can't really say more than buyer beware but at the end of the day the final decision is yours.

reading various bits on our forums for a few years, here's my current understanding (and note this may be wrong!)

user 'Pocketgps' spent loads of time collating and creating a low bridge poi set that was free. this was being abused and being sold via ebay and other websites for a profit (basically selling stolen goods) so they ceased updating the file as others were benefitting financially from his hard work. i think the 'tomtom hall of shame reference' is due to his files being shared via tomtom home?

Spot ON Laughing Crying or Very sad

At the end of the day its nearly impossible for us small people to stop it, or even the big boys. Lets face it, nearly every software company in the world is ripped off for millions every day via web downloads. Just look at the music industry.

Yes I gave up doing any more of the low bridge poi's or updating the original ones back in 2005.

And as regards TT, its the fact that people can just load anything to their HOME download centre without any checks at all. I know if they change the name of the upload what can TT do about it (how can they know if it's legitimate). They are just asking for trouble by introducing this system. Placing start screen images etc is one thing, but poi data could come from anywhere, so how can they police it.

End of story - now lets all move on Wink

If it was found to be sharing the actual maps you can bet your bottom dollar they would soon disable it! - Mike
