I can't find the thread now but I thought you said you were going to "name and shame" - presumably publishing actual names and possibly other identifying features. That may have more effect perhaps against individuals. Legal problems perhaps(or me making it up)?

Sadly and frustratingly we cannot do this owing to Data Protection legislation.

a forum username is not an identifying feature...? it means nothing. if a user decides to tell his work mates what his forum username is then that's their responsibility isn't it?

john smith with a forum user name of TheMonkey works in an office and posts here regularly. his boss chances upon the site and sees lots of posts by TheMonkey during work hours. what happens? nothing! there are no identifiable things from a forum username. UNLESS john smith tells people, on his own accord, what his forum user name is - in which case it is the forum user who has passed on the identifiable information?

Well in advance of a thread of its own, the latest member to get a ban as a result of piracy is bobthebuilder.

Converting the data to other formats (Sygic in this case) will not obscure or remove our fingerprint data Evil or Very Mad

If fact, why not publish a list which is updated at the same time as the cameras?
I'm sure MaFt would be able to look after that.

I think the shame list is a good idea, and if such a list could be on the download page, it could act as a deterent to would be pirates.

I only have one concern, what if like myself, your satnav died, and you had no opportunity to remove your POI's and camera database before sending it for repair.

Should we inform pocketgpsworld.com of this, as I am not saying it does or will happen, but potentially, there could be the rare unscrupulous person who sees an opportunity to make some extra cash without comeback.

At least then, pocketgpsworld.com would be aware of situation.

There are always going to be such 'excuses' shall we say. In the unlikely event that they arose we would ask for proof to back up the claim. The files shared are invariably the downloaded package rather then files copied off a device.

"It was away getting repaired, wasn't me"

"When was it sent away"

"31st August"

"Ok, well the shared files were downloaded at your IP Address on 1st September"

It's called the circle of truth Laughing

I agree with you and your reasons.

So long as person can verify satnav was in for genuine repair then that is good enough. If they cannot, then they have no excuse and should be shamed.

When I bought my current TomTom, I qualified for a LMG upgrade one day before the offer expired.
I went through all sorts of stuff for TomTom, send copy of receipt, send screen shot, send serial number etc. etc. I was really annoyed with the whole thing, but it was in my interest to do it, so I gritted my teeth and eventually (4 WEEKS) got my upgrade.

Similarly, if PGPSW ask for proof that your device was away for repair, or that you have sold it with our database on, it will be in most peoples own interests to supply the requested proof. If you have done nothing wrong, then you have nothing to fear. An inconvenience, I admit, but worth it to keep your good name I think.

I'd bet a pound to a pinch of something that PGPSW wouldn't drag it out for 4 weeks!!

A few weeks ago I tried to sign in to my account only to find the password I had been using for years was not working. I thought the worst someone had high jacked my account changed my password and downloaded the database and was selling it on eBay.

I was able to get my password sent to me and I logged on and changed my password I then email Darren and asked him to confirm the last time I downloaded the database, within a few minutes he was able to tell me the data, time and even which files I downloaded.

In the last few months I have noticed maps at my local supermarket having pocketgpsworld.com camera locations. I have flicked through the pages and found locations I have submitted and even found the location that I was able to be awarded my lifetime membership with. I pointed these locations out to my wife and she looked at me as if I had two heads, Laughing Out Loud. I have been asked loads of time if I can give friends the database but I have always and still intend to say no.

Is there a shakingyourheadsmileycon? Oh dear, you want to get out more Twisted Evil Tell you what, get yourself a satnav and use it to have a few trips out and about in the car!

Or you could buy a few copies of the map and cut out the award location and send it as a postcard to somebody with an arrow and "This is where I submitted a camera"

Or a suggestion for our unmarried members - take your partner-to-be on a tour of your favourite camera report locations.

(Jeepers, I hope nobody thinks I'm serious.) Embarassed

What a good idea you have.

The wonderful opportunity to pass on such interesting and invaluable information that may prove useful to a partner.

Information such as date and time camera was first spotted and by whom, were they already a lifetime member, or retelling the story of the camera that almost got you that lifetime membership!

Alternatively, if you have more than one device take a trip, with them all routing you in different ways, and then pointing out the superiority of each product.

Then at some point, later when alone, you can reflect on your favourite camera locations!!!!!
