I've recently purchased a Nuvi 250 and am just wondering where the benefit lies with the SD slot? I have managed to get the speed cameras onto the unit, along with some POI. Is it there simply as a way of getting imformation from your PC onto the unit, or is there more to it?

You can use it for mp3s or you may have other databases or maps you want to swap occassionally.

I'll have to put Chris Rea's road to Hell on it for the times I go on the M25 then. Smile

You're probably right. To be honest it was a generic answer for all Nuvis and what the SD card can be used for. Obviously the ability to play mp3 varies from model to model.

Thinking about it - there is a picture viewer on the unit, so maybe it could be used as a mobile photo frame.

Yes. Basically the SD Card slot is just there to expand the internal memory. Anything you would put on the internal memory could also be put on the SD Card, including POIs and the Speed Camera Database.

The SD slot is particularly useful for extra maps. You can purchase or load mapping for additional regions on a SD card. You can use your Garmin normally to route, search for poi's etc for the additional region.

You can use it as a photo viewer, and also change the welcome screen.

I've put a picture of Mrs Gilesme on there - if someone nicks it, they'll soon bring it back....

I keep all the POIs I use in a card in the SD slot rather than download them in to the Garmin itself. There are several advantages to this. First, you can return the Garmin to its original factory state by simply removing the card at any time. The Garmin still "reads" the POIs as simply and quickly as it would if they were downloaded in to the system. You can store and use different sets of POIs from different sources on separate cards thereby removing any risk that the files are duplicated and therefore shown twice on your maps. Similarly, its possible to store and use POIs for different countries in separate cards and use these when visiting that place.
