As I've posted on another thread I got the DVD for free and it's let me stick europe on so I'm well chuffed.

One orders the free Map updateup date DVD, on line at MyGarmin. This was done after getting the email telling me of the update. Bu beware I have had a major problem.

I have a Garmin Street Pilot C510, and have just received my DVD from Garmin for the “Map Update 2008 – City Navigator Europe NT.

This is meant to have all the new maps for each European cluster of countries. UK Ireland, Germany, France, Mediterranean, Alps etc etc.

I activated the DVD on auto run, and loaded the DVD info on to my PC as per instructions, and then went into update by connecting the C510. It did all the software updates and then a drop down menu appears (which one assumes will show all areas). But only the Alps, Spain & Portugal, Nordics, North Eastern Europe.

No UK and Ireland, so I exited the program. When I went to the C510 in stand-alone mode the update-er had installed a new template of all major roads in Europe and whipped all the installed UK & Ireland Info. So no post code search. I can see the UK and all M and A rods and that’s it. No Poi’s for fuel hotels etc that where there before.

So one has to be able to select the countries and load the new data, but the auto run drop down list has all the other European countries missing. By looking at the DVD one can see that UK and Ireland is embedded, but the auto run appears to have a fault be warned.

I ran this DVD on two PC’s both on XP and both with plenty of memory.

Now no active sat nav, and will have to chase Garmin on Monday !!!!!!

Has it installed a program called MapInstall? If so can you use this to add extra regions? (This was the procedure I used to extend the coverage on my Nuvi 300).

Yes it installed map install, but when I went there and put in the key (copied from the online update to My Garmin – the Green number Key is update and the new map key under that). I highlighted UK and Ireland on Map Install and it told me there was no memory in the 510 !!! Mean time (as luckily I had a full back up). I have reloaded the original 2006-software map set (NI version 9). So I am back to where I was before I did the update. I was in a panic as I could not mind where I had backed up the 510 when I got it (and it was in fact in the Garmin main programs file in C Drive). I will ring Garmin and see if they will exchange this DVD, as I believe it’s a duff one, we will see? So the main point here as a started for ten, is back up before any updates.

When I put the serial number of my month old Nuvi 760 in the Garmin page, it tells me that there's no update available.

Mine came within a week. Although my c510 is UK&I only, the DVD that Garmin has sent is for Europe.

Ahahaha, I'd not checked the version on the Nuvi, you are of course correct, it says "City Navigator Europe NT 2008"

It doesn't come with a DVD for route planning etc on the PC though, can I still request that from Garmin and expect it to work OK?

Garmin want £51.06 + VAT so that's £59.99

I know this aint cheaper but i just came across this

http://www.pentagongps.co.uk/garmin-mapsource-version-10-nt-2008-plug-play-europe-map-sd-card-with-free-full-europe-garmin-travel-guide-i5763.html

You get the maps on SD card instead of the DVD version, but they are giving you the full european travel guide with it. Just wondering if that was a good bargin or not?

I have heard a whisper that if you wait till 2009 to update, Garmin will have some interesting additions to their maps, e.g. vehicle related routes. Which means, if you are driving a HGV it wont send you down a narrow lane!

when will navteq start supporting IQ routes? or whatever they are called. Will it even be compatible for routing with the current nuvis? e.g. 760, 205W etc.

I believe Navteq maps already has this info on it. I was told by Garmin at the NEC Bike show last November that the 2008 maps would have this info on it, & later in the year the 'Truck' setting would make use of the info.
