I may a bit naieve but I saw got the "FREE" city navigator NT V9 dvd update from Garmin thinking that I qualified for a free update. Yes , I know, theres no such thing as a freebie..Anyway I got the disc and installed it in my PC..fine so far.. I input my original 25 digitcode from my old v8 disc, I thought this was what to do. the installer said "congratulations you have installed....etc" so I carried on and installed the update into my Nuvi. Now every time I switch it on i get "cannot update maps" and Garmin want $82 to sell me an update key.
Is there a way to uninstall the v9 maps from the Nuvi and return to my V8 ones.?

Did you take a backup of your Nuvi before you attempted the upgrade?

If so, you could delete all the files on the Nuvi then copy the backup files to the device.

If not ..... sorry can't help Crying or Very sad

Normally, with Garmin any new maps loaded 'over write' the existing!
So just select the v8 maps you want from the PC and transfer them.

You did not say whether it was to internal memory or SD card?

I imagine the v9 updated disc has modified the base file on the internal drive of the Nuvi (gmapbmap.img) which is now looking for an unlock code.

I got this reply from Garmin:-

I am afraid you have loaded the mapping on without purchasing the correct unlock code for version 9 mapping, you need to go to your My Garmin account to get the correct unlock code. I am also sorry to say the free update ran for 1 year from Sept 06 - Sept 07, and as it is now the end of October there will be a charge to get the correct unlock codefrom My Garmin to unlock V9. Thank you for contacting Garmin(Europe)Ltd
Very helpful...not

I ordered the disc in plenty of time, but it took them a couple of months to get it out to me and then have the tumerity to tell me I am too late. Exclamation

anyway...
I have a memory card in the Nuvi as it was ordered from Pixmania and was loaded with French maps originally, I put all the UK ones on the card.
but I get the same message whether the card is installed or not.

if I replace the above base file with the back up one would this cure it ?

Should i wipe the whole unit and install the backup file again ?
what does this involve,

would a windows style "Format" of the Nuvi kill it or could I then re install the backup and off we go

any help would be appreciated

Ta

Maps on the SD card will be supplementary maps and therefore not affect the message.

Only wipe your Nuvi hard-drive if you took a full-backup of your working Nuvi with v8 maps - copying the files off the nuvi to your pc hard-drive prior to the v9 upgrade. I think if you copy the back-up files off the pc to the Nuvi your should be back with v8 base maps and hence get rid of the message asking for the unlock code.

I'm with you - this is not very good service from Garmin. if I were you, I would escalate it within Garmin especially if you can show them that they were the cause for the delay. Hopefully they will reconsider. Its not worth paying for a v9 upgrade as the next upgrade to 2008 will be available in the next few months

Lets start again.
What maps were in the unit when you had it?[Which version of v8]
Did you have the DVD to complement the maps [v8] in the unit?
Was that DVD [v8] installed on the PC?
Were those maps in internal memory or on the SD card in the unit?

When the Nuvi arrived it had the French maps pre installed on the unit. It came with the "City Navigatot NT+ Europe V8" DVD.
I put the mapsource onto my PC, bought a 1gb card for the unit and installed the GB maps from the mapsource onto the card.- along with a load of Mp3s.

sometime in August I ordered the V9 dvd from Garmin as it was offered with free unlock. It arrived about 3-4 days ago. I put this onto the PC and
assumed -wrongly- that the original 25 digit code that came with the unit qualified for the upgrade.
The program allowed me to install everything even telling me "Congratulations you have installed....etc". Now I find that I need another code and the unit displays the Can't unlock message.
The mapsource V9 on the PC shows map detail locked on the bottom corner.
I have a full ( i think) backup from when I first had the unit and had to roll back on an update.

Hope this helps

I assume from your details that you have full unlock for v8.

Therefore, go to the PC and select the maptiles v8 you need and transfer them to the Unit.

Next year [2008] update to v10 if you feel the need [£50 approx].
V9 is now a waste of money.
You can remove the v9 from the PC in the meantime if you need the PC space!
V9, gave us in the UK, Ireland 'in full' and little else!!!!

You need to roll back the base map (France) on the unit. v9 update may have affected other files on the device so I would recommend deleting files on the nuvi then copying your backup files to the device (assuming you did the full backup!). You should then be back at square one before the v9 update. You'll probably have to update the sw version on the device through web updater.

Firstly let me say i completely agree with NuviNewby. The service I have recieved from Garmin has been awfull. Like him i attempted to get the free map upgrade from Garmin which became a horror tale... 17 days to post me out the first one (atlantic blue chart delivered instead) them another 13 days before the V9 software turned up and the unlock key had expired... you can pay us for another one! Not bloody likely!

A helpful lot, these chaps at Garmin.

I have had a look at yourGarmin account and am afraid the only way to get the Unlock code is to pay the $75. The only other alternative is sending your unit into us to get the original mapping back on but this will cost £30, i am sorry i am not able to give you a more positive answer. Thank you for contacting Garmin(Europe)Ltd.

Why do we have to put up with with poor service like this .

I think Ill save the $75 and put it towards a TomTom 520

I'm surprised with recent postal strikes and Garmins delay in sending the update disc to you that they are taking this approach.

i'm also surprised, Garmin where really helpful ....

if you using XP it may be possible to revert to a previous state via restore

or you could see if you can reinstall and unlock from the V8 CD
