Thieves track sat nav route home

Thieves stole a £20,000 car after taking a sat nav and a set of keys from a car parked at Alton Towers and following the sat nav's route home.
The family returned from the Staffordshire theme park to their home in Shropshire to find their Saab convertible had been taken.
The thieves had pressed the "home" button to find the route the family had saved on their sat nav system.
Police said motorists should not leave the systems in unattended cars.
Det Sgt Chris Walsh said the only way people could stop valuables being stolen from their car was to remove them completely.
Police said that in Shropshire alone more than 130 sat nav systems have been stolen since the beginning of the year.
Most are taken from vehicles left in car parks or parked on private driveways.

I either take my TT Go 700 with me or lock it in the car boot and am thinking of setting "Home" to my local Police Station.

I also have the 4 digit password activated. How easy is it for a typical low life thief to crack it.

Not sure if i've lost the plot here, but why do Sat Nav owners set a "home" with all personal details?

I have never found the need to "mark" where i live, as i can't see the point - i already know my way home. Confused

Oh dear.

Mind you they could have just as easily burgled the house to get the keys. Apparently that's how cars get stolen these days because it's near enough impossible to nick them without the keys....

Pretend to be a thief and deliberately enter the wrong PIN and see how long it goes before telling you you've run out of tries - apparently it doesn't. So worst case scenario (for thief) is as long as it takes to input a possible 10,000 numbers. But who sets it at 0000 or 9999?

Every sat nav we sell, we tell customers not to set "Home" to their exact address, rather the town centre or city centre they're from. That way it avoids any chance of the sat nav being used as a "more stuff to steal" finder.

You wouldn't believe the amount of people who say "oh I want it to tell me how to get home" I mean Censored , it's not as if you don't know how to already!

Censored by DennisN because I think that means what I think it means.
