Hi there,

I have bought a Road Angel Nav 9000, and have found there the TMC (Data by ITIS) is not that great.

I was on the M4 this morning sitting in traffic (slow traffic for about 2 hours) yet the Road Angel said the road was clear.

on the website is says

Quote:
Please note - even though the traffic button is labelled 'TMC' the traffic technology uses GPRS and not FM radio traffic message channel.

And the unit had told me the traffic data was updated. (updates every 2 mins)

Is this a ITIS TMC problem or is it the Road Angel Unit?

Also has anyone ever used TMC VIA GPS before?

Thanks
Robert Confused

I do not think iTIS offer their traffic data via GPRS direct to consumers, so if the GPRS service was saying no traffic, it's possible it was a problem with the Road Angel GPRS server.

I'm not sure what criteria iTIS use for slow traffic.

Along the M4, I believe that your biggest problem is likely to be lack of reception of the iTIS RDS/TMC signal - do you know if you definitely had TMC reception or if your Road Angel Nav 9000 was telling you the road was clear simply because it wasn't receiving data to know otherwise?

As far as I recall, TrafficMaster TMC data does not contain speed or time delay information - only an approximate distance (ie slow/stationary traffic for x miles).

However, if I remember correctly, the TrafficMaster Freeway system uses specific speeds to trigger warnings:

slow traffic for x miles, expect y minutes' delay

very slow traffic for x miles, expect y minutes' delay

stationary traffic for x miles, expect y minutes' delay

I can't remember the speeds which trigger these warnings, but I think it's 30mph for slow traffic, 20mph for very slow traffic and below 10mph for stationary traffic.

GPS_fan - note the quote in the original post - although Road Angel call it TMC, it is not RDS-TMC, but GPRS-TMC, ie like the TomTom Traffic Subscription service.
