I've been in situations whereby I'd have liked to have blocked streets, renamed them, correctly positioned POIs and reversed traffic flow. The 'report other error' means that you can report missing streets, etc.. This will then be collated and, if necessary, verified by TomTom (not TeleAtlas) to make theirs the most accurated maps available.

Did they give any details as to the method/timetable for street changes etc 'verfied by TomTom (not TeleAtlas)' to be made available to users? i.e. would they be available via the new home system or by conventional chargeable map upgrades.

The short answer is that no timescale was given for verification. I'm working on the long answer.

I'm also curious about how the reported errors are used by Teleatlas if at all. If you report errors do you still need to use http://mapfeedback.teleatlas.com or does Map Share do the same thing. This sounds like a great idea and I'm sure it will only get better over time.

To be on the safe side, I'd carry on reporting to TeleAtlas as well. MapShare doesn't automatically do it and there's no guarantee that TomTom will pass on the information. Why should their userbase make maps better for the TA using opposition?

to be honest i reckon it'd be worth it! there'll be a lot of work involved at their end and the benefits are obvious and exactly what everyone has wanted fr the last few years - the ost up to date maps!

hopefully they'll realise the number of people that would want to use this feature and offer it at a sensible price knowing that they will get tens of thousands of subscribers

I suppose that a similar argument would be that the 910 was all the 700 should have been. Damn, all those years ago I bought a Ford Escort when what Ford should have given me was a Focus.

I'm beginning to think that TT are doing a Microsoft again. A small improvement over hyped and over marketed. I appreciate that it would be nice to be able to mark blocked roads and changes of direction, although I think the fun over unverfied mobiles will be nothing compared to the prospect of every temporary road closure and contra flow going into the system!

As far as I can see the real need for rapid updating of missing roads, revised juctions and incorrect speed limits etc., which I think that most people reading the hype rather than the detail will expect, won't be there. There will be a delay in TomTom verifying such changes, then they will need to be incorporated into the maps, and then made available. My experience of TT , and most large companies is nothing is for nothing.

It's quite possible that the new TT Home system will make true map updates a much faster and economical proposition, but I'll believe it when I see it.

It would have been nice if they'd announced the reinstatement of the ability to program road speeds, and avoid marked areas, but then I'm forgetting they were removed due to popular demand! Laughing

The point about Map Share is that Tom Tom will be doing it as a commercial thingy, so there will be nothing significant issued to us. And I have to agree with the idea of them doing a Microsoft. MS have been getting away with users paying to be Beta+ testers for years (does anybody actually believe that all these so-called Windows Updates and Service Packs are actually updates, not bug fixes? I wonder how many bug fixes I've received over the years? For a program which cost me a few hundred pounds?), so TT seem to have twigged a good idea!

As I am a "most people reading the hype rather than the detail", I believe the map updates will arrive at no charge and "significant revisions" every time I connect to Home. Only I simply DON'T believe it! emjaiuk is right, it'll be a nightmare if you take on all the unconfirmed stuff and a complete waste of time if you don't. This sounds like another "popular demand" flashing red invisible speed limit (I suppose that's still on the new range).

What happens when TeleAtlas deliver new maps to TT, which don't agree with the maps TT are running?

I wonder if the new x20 range will switch off with the ignition again, or will that be a permanent No,No by popular demand too?

Now there's a suggestion. I presume all us unpopular folk have already tried sending feedback to TT on these?

I hope it's safe to assume that as in previous new version releases, TomTom will make v7 available to existing device users. I'm just uploading some screenshots from the new v7 software and will preview them here once ready.

Customisable cursors at long last!

TomTom have also responded with this screen shot to answer some of the concerns from users about how Map Share works and how you can choose to accept changes etc.

Now we need no longer rely on the road speed flashing red to alert us to our speed!

I don't have a screen shot but you can at long last now move the status bar to the side of the display, great for wide screen devices.

Hmm, Over speed warning one feature I certainly won't be turning on unless the speed data in the map has its accuracy improved by a considerable amount, this better not be on by default though - I would have been happy if they simply changed the Red on Blue flashing display to something you can see - Mike

Have a quick look at the yourNav report on the new software here http://www.yournav.com/content/s/342/First_meet_with_TomTom_NavCore_7.html, I think it answers a few more questions :P

Apart from the custom cursors, all the other screenshots were published in our report here, yesterday!

Some more information from TomTom came today. Prices are as yet unknown but 'in excess of €450' is a realistic figure. The GPS chipset is SirfSTAR 3 and I have a table of what units get what by way of internal memory.
Code:

Region                             GO 520   GO 720

France                             512 MB    2 GB
Italy                              512 MB    2 GB
Spain & Portugal                     1 GB    2 GB
Great Britain                      512 MB    2 GB
Germany, Austria & Switzerland       1 GB    2 GB
Belgium, Netherlands & Luxemburg   512 MB    2 GB
Scandinavia                        512 MB    2 GB

Further to the questions about verification of errors, the verification process is not an exact science and each received report will be prioritised depending on its location, impact, number of times it is reported, etc..
