I have received a trial of Ericsson Mobile Navigator. I've given it a go and am happy to share my conclusions with others.

The concept is different to regular satnav. It is a Java application that will run on any mobile that supports java. It does not require a smartphone running windows. It uses a bluetooth GPS receiver and GPRS to contact an Ericsson server to receive route info etc.

My overall comment is that it works. I used it for a 300 mile trip last week. The route was good, it re-routed where necessary and I received speed camer warnings. Supposedly it also notifies you about traffic problems on route - I'm not sure whether it re-routes.

However, the major problem I found was that, on my phone at least (a SonyEricsson K600i) the satnav dissapeared if I made or received a call. Not withstanding the fact that we should not be on the phone whilst driving I found this made the product unusable. I'd be interested to hear views from other handset users - this may be an issue with my particular handset.

Subject to fixing the above - it is a valid concept. The potential benefits are that you always have access to uptodate maps / camera databases etc and that real-time traffic info should be available.

Obviously it needs to transfer GPRS data which has a cost. I reset my counters before a 3 hour journey. The total data transferred was about 200Kbytes which would typically cost about 20p. Considerably less than I often spend checking phone based traffic reports. However, roaming data rates are considerably higher if you wanted to use it abroad so cost could become an issue.

Right now I won't be abandoning my traditional satnav - but I will be watching this space.

the nav applictaction being webbased may only work if it has gprs connection as at the moment the only way of receiving a call and using data on the same handset is trough 3G or hspda this i would think in why the app dissapered when a call was received. i would have thought that it wouldat least bufffer some info to phone for whena call is received with data rates in the uk become very cheep there maybe a market for it off board systems but even with t-mobile in the eu its 7qiud a mb ouch but at 200kb for a 3hrjpurney getting to a destination may olny be 14 quid so for an ocasional trip its not to bad

I have 3G so I think it was the handset that couldn't handle both at the same time. It might be better on a smartphone. Anyone tried it?

I wonder if Ericsson's Mobile Navigator isn't just a rebranded version of Navigon's Java app also coincidentally called Mobile Navigator and launched this week?

Does it look similar to this?
