I'm almost too embarrassed to ask this one. Embarassed I have just downloaded GPSViewer to try to debug a problem with my TomTom BT GPS. I notice that there are check boxes for Cold, Warm and Hot Start. What is this all about then?

Cheers!

These terms are generally used to evaluate the time taken from turning on the GPS until it gets a 'lock' on position from the sats. I don't know if there are any definitions as such but..

Hot start - would imply that the GPS receiver has just been turned off and then back on again. It usually refers to a few 10's of seconds of being off (e.g. battery change). It is assumed that the unit has not been moved whilst off.

Warm start - like above but off for longer (10's of mins - up to a couple of hours). Assumed that unit has not been moved (e.g. parked car, gone away, come back and turned GPS back on).

Cold Start - off for several hours / days or moved position a long way since last being used. (e.g. taken unit on holiday flight whilst off or not used over a weekend).

Hope this helps.

Many thanks Phil. But do you know what the functions of the Hot, Warm and Cold 'radio buttons' on the GPSViewer display are for? Do they simulate the three start-up conditions?

Cheers!

...But I had a look at a manual for a HOLUX GPS and it had this bit of info in it. (I paraphrase for simplicity)

HOT Start: Restart the GPS using it's internally stored data.

WARM Start (No Init): As HOT start but clears ephemeris data only.

WARM Start (Init): This option clears everything then loads a user-defined set of data and restarts GPS

COLD Start: Clears all data and restarts GPS

The manual was the SiRF Demo manual on this page http://www.holux-uk.com/Products/cr-100/download.shtml

If the GPSViewer which is available on the same page is the one you are using I would suggest that the WARM start it has is the same as the WARM Start (no init) above. So your supposition is correct - it simulates startup in the three conditions.

Phil,

Many thanks for taking the time to reply! I also see that you are a Memory Map user. I have Bayo and was considering a move to MM so I sent them two emails with pre-sales questions. They couldn't be bothered to reply so I won't be spending my hard earned with that shower!

Memory map is an awesum product. I would not use anything else for off-road stuff. I have never had a need to contact them though so can't report on their service.
