Permission is being sought to spend £100,000 of speeding fine cash on surveillance equipment to catch people who vandalise speed cameras.
The Avon and Somerset Safety Camera Partnership said it would use any available system - including cameras - to apprehend those responsible.

But campaigners opposed to speed cameras through legal means said the money would be spent better elsewhere.

"Vehicle-activated slow-down signs are more effective and cheaper," one said.

'Massively unpopular'

Mark McArthur-Christie from the Association of British Drivers, added: "Every survey we have seen that has not been done by a camera partnership shows they are massively unpopular with drivers and locals."

Avon and Somerset Safety Camera Partnership said it was committed to casualty reduction and would help police track down the people responsible for damaging fixed cameras.

"It's only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured setting fire to a camera," he said.

The partnership said no council tax funding was being used in its attempt to reduce vandalism and arson attacks."

Paul Smith from the Safe Speed road safety campaign said he did not condone vandalism and believed the partnerships were just spending good money after bad.

"I cannot believe they are still wasting money on speed cameras.

"It's time to call it a day and move on to real road safety issues," he said.

The row emerged after drivers in a Somerset town claimed a spy camera had been installed close to a speed camera that had been repeatedly vandalised.

Ahh, so no one has actually been injured while torching speed cameras. That's nice to know.

Unfortunately, a number of speed cameras have actually caused crashes. Let's burn them all. That's much safer! Evil or Very Mad
