Does anyone know if any GPS system (other than TomTom!) that will show the current car speed on the display screen as you drive?

Many of the Garmin units will show it in big numbers on the trip computer screen. When you come to a turn, a pop-up picture of the intersection appears.

You can see the manuals with screenshots on Garmin's website.

Some Garmin units allow you to customise the map page to show the speed too.

The Navman N series (at least my N40i) displays road speed and very accurately too!

How do you know it's very accurate?

I'm asking because I am having ongoing problems with a garage regarding my vehicles speed and its limiter.

There was a fairly long discussion of this in this thread.

To summarise: Most GPS manufacturers claim an accuracy of .1 mph on flat ground at constant speed and direction with a good GPS fix. The sat nav system displays the speed it gets from the GPS so it is usually very accurate.

If there is a dispute with your garage then take them for a (white knuckle?) ride and show them the speed on the GPS.

Alternatively, you can print out the GPS chipset specifications (probably a SiRF chipset?) and they state how accurate the speed is.

My Garmin 60CSX does that and records your journey/track with relevant speeds [every few seconds] and all that can be transferred to the PC!

You could try loading a third party application to the 710 which gives it the capability to datalog.

The while in the suspect vehicle datalog a trip when at max speed (a couple of minutes should be all you need). Then use the data to produce a printed report of Lat/ Long and Speed. You will soon see if the vehicle is not speed limitting correctly, and give the mechanic the print out to prove it. Have a look at THIS - as allways with third party applications make sure you back up your device BEFORE loading or trying this.

I use the logger on my 910 quite often, the data oututs can be manipulated into other forms of GPS related traces using GPSBABLE - Mike

The NAVMAN PiN 570 also shows the speed that you are doing on the screen.

It has the option of Time to distance, Distance Travelled, Speed and other ones.
