I'm off on holiday to Goa and want to do a lot of walking and sight seeing.

I don't need Sat Nav in the usual sense of being told how to get from A to B

However I'd like to be able to walk and know where I am on a map.

I've looked at Google Earth images of Goa and they're very detailed indeed, you can see lots of things on the map.

So is there anything that can allow me to take a Google Earth image or Microsoft Earth image and use it on my Pocket PC?

I have two one with Pocket PC 2002 and the other 2003 and a CF GPS Unit and a 1gb and 2gb SD card, so plenty of storage space, but is there anything that can allow me to download a map to the pocket pc and it will be able to show me where I am standing on the map whilst I am in India?

BTW I have a Navman N20 with UK & European Maps - what would happen if I take that to India where the maps aren't covered?

Would I at least be able to go somewhere, mark it as a favourite and use the Navman to take me back there again?

Have a look at OziExplorer (runs on PC) and OziExplorerCE (runs on PDA). www.oziexplorer.com This allows you to use any electronic map for which you have two or (pref) more calibration points. Although I couldn't possibly condone this - you could always do a screen capture of an image that meets this criteria and use the PC version to do the calibration and then convert for use on a PDA.

If you do go this way - have a go with an image of your local area first as there are lots of potential ways to introduce errors. Once you are confident it all works then you should be able to do the same for India (or elsewhere) without being disappointed that you have wrongly calibrated the map and have no way of correcting it.

Just to stress - you need both the PC and PDA version to do this as the calibration is only possible on the PC version.

Also you really have to be careful of copyright infrigement - if you do something like this don't even think of publishing the calibrated maps - could get you into a lot of bother!

BTW I am a big fan of OziExplorer - it's a very well developed piece of s/w (and I have no commercial interest in it!)
