One last thing, if and I say if TT do release a mkII for UK use will those who purchased units not meant for the UK have any claim against TT?

Perhaps, as i said what about Europeans coming to the UK, would they have to buy another MK2 version just for their holidays?.

As a supplier, Eldar, can't you get a definitive answer to this from TomTom??

To be perfectly honest with you I wouldn't be able to get an official answer, and I won't be able to disclose any unofficial information.

Here is a reply from Tomtom support

Thank you for your feedback. We have directed it to our development team who have told us to inform you that we are looking to implement some of the changes you suggest in future updates to our software. Particularly of interest to us is a feature enabling users to manually select their prefered stations.

For now one method of improving the performance of your TMC receiver is by selecting "TomTom Traffic" on the Main Menu, and within the TMC traffic options "Select RDS-TMC Country". From here select "Any Country (Strongest Signal)" and then select another country. Once again please select "Any Country (Strongest Signal)". This refreshes the finding of the signal quicker to hopefully lock onto the Classic FM station which sends the TMC data.

With best regards,

The TomTom Customer Support Team

This will cause even more confusion as drivers would need to know the frequency for the area, fine for around home, but a 400 mile drive in one hit would require multiple entries of frequency to be made - not easy when driving.
A smart move would be to link the current position to a specific frequency and let the unit select the frequency automatically for any given area in the country. Don't know if this is possible though I do know where the Classic FM transmitters are located and their associated frequency in POI format - Mike

Of course the need or existance of a UK tweaked TMC receiver is all high speculation however making the wild assumption that one does become available those who bought units not intended for the UK will not have any sort of claim against TT.
Under UK law the contract of sale is with the retailer not the manufacturer so assuming the TT TMC receiver was sold by a retailer as for use in the UK and it didn't work the case would be against the retailer. If Tom Tom do subsequently release a UK tweaked receiver it's basically tough on all those who decided to buy something that apparently hadn't been launched in this country.

As for Europeans potentially having problems using their TT TMC receivers here the same may happen to those who bought Garmin Nuvis and GTM12 receiver on the continent.Due to various issues it appears as if Garmin are having to supply replacement 12v power leads to UK purchasers in an effort to resolve their own TMC reception problems

What a load of codswallop, the RDS TMC Receiver currently on sale is for the UK aswell as all the european countries, I have been in contact with there support team on numerous times about this useless piece of kit & they are fully aware that I am in the Uk & never once have they said that my unit is only for the other european countries & that it will not work in the UK. They did say that they were working on a firmware update for the problems with this receiver.
Tomtom have messed up big time on this one & I think it will require more than a firmware update to get out of this deep hole that they are in. I did get mine from Germany & on the back of the card is the number 9V00.006 which is what retailers in this country are all stating.

Thanks for advice folks, but this product needs more work on it by TT, so will return/sell it, and subsribe to TT Traffic after the month's free trial.

Which is my point entirely. By the time the TT TMC receiver goes on general sale in the UK Tom Tom may have come up with an update which ensures a satisfactory performance in this country.

I also fail to see how TomTom have messed up when as you've said the unit you bought was from Germany ? Although the receiver may well be the same as that which eventually goes on general sale as you've noted they appear to be aware of issues and are working on a fix. If you choose to buy products from another country before it's generally released by the manufacturer in your own you are always going to take a risk.

I would however take issue with Tom Tom if they've decided to 'soft' release the TMC receiver in the UK and using those early adopters as beta testers.

It WAS generally and officially released to the dealers in the UK as I pointed out to you before.

I'm afraid my definition of 'generally and officially released' must differ from yours.

As you are no doubt aware the TT TMC receiver is currently only available to the UK through a couple of small specialist online dealers and not through any other of the normal high street and online retailers ie Halfords, Currys, PC World, Amazon, etc, etc.

I, and I presume many others, would say that only when it's on sale throughout the UK from all those high st retailers named above and elsewhere can it have been said to have been 'generally and officially released'

I have to agree with RDS as far as I am concerned at this point in time you can only get grey imports.

They are not grey imports. Guys, I cannot keep going on that this item IS available to the dealers in the UK because it doesn't make any impression on you. The actual physical availability is an entirely different thing and I've already explained why Argos or Tesco might not have it yet.
The receiver is not working well because it has a relatively poor sensitivity, but when connected to an external FM antenna, its performance becomes acceptable.
The reason it might work better in France and Germany (although my experience tells me otherwise) is that they have a radio infrastructure geared up for this particular purpose (traffic info via FM) and we don't.
It's like that with mobile phones - you can have areas with poor reception, but it has nothing (or almost nothing) to do with the phone itself.
If TomTom improve the receiver, it will be for the whole of Europe, not just for the UK.

Far be it for me to disagree with someone who can see the point I'm trying to make if what has previously been said is true then I don't believe those TT TMC receivers currently being sold to the UK can be classed as 'grey imports'

As far as I understand it the term grey import refers to an item that has been imported into a country, legally, but without the agreement of the manufacturer.
If, as has been asserted by Eldar previously, the receivers have been brought direct from Tom Tom with their knowledge that they are for the UK then they can't be grey imports. However that is not to say that Tom Tom have acknowledged that they will work satisfactorily within this country.
Note: It is still perfectly possible for the TMC receivers to be on a UK dealers price list however they may not yet be for use within the UK as UK based dealers may legally be entitled to export to the rest of the EU.
