On the newer models and updated software, there is the ability to input Buddies, and find their location. Is there any way that you could "buddy" with a friend, and then have that friend locate your satnav covertly if it were stolen. I realise that the new owner would have to link it to his phone for traffic info or hands free for this to work, but it seems better than nothing.

GPS Systems do not bradcast their position from the unit (they just know where they are and apply that to a map) so there would be no way for one unit to locate another.

If I understand the way the Buddies system works, at least on TomTom, every so often, your GPS sends a text messages to the GPS of your chosen Buddies (who, presumably, have to be using a similar model). You can track, on your GPS, the physical location of your Buddies. I can't see, therefore, why this wouldn't work to help track a stolen unit, except that thief/new "owner", could remove your Buddy from their list.

As this system uses the GPRS connection via Bluetooth and a mobile phone you would need to have the lowlifes (thief) phone configured to track a stolen device in this way, not something I think that would work in practice - Mike

Another example of where i speak without fully knowing what i was talking about. My apologies. I didn't realise this was what the Buddies feature did - thought it was some sort of IM (Instant Messenger)!!

You need to reveal your Buddy email address, which is the one you used to sign up to TomTom Plus.

Unfortunately some lowlife scum pinched my Nokia N91 on Tuesday so I can't play buddies until I decide what to get. I might wait for the N93 to come down a bit....
