I haev recently sen the Ski-Nav package for hire in Morzine. Unfortunately this only covers Morzine and is hire only at €60 per week.

Does anyone know of any GPA application that supports navigation on ski slopes? I haev an iPaq 3850 and Navman 3450 with 128Mb CF and 128b SD cards. Confused

Any decent offroad (topographical) GPS package should be suitable to be used on ski slopes. You will have to buy topographical map packages, or you can scan your own paper maps and calibrate them for use with OziExplorer for example.

Just don't expect to do speed and distance calculations and stuff - GPS only shows horizontal speed and none of the programs takes your (rapid) descent into account when calculating distances.

Thanks for that.

Realistically I will have to wait for the commercial ski-nav product to be available. Crying or Very sad

It's unlikely that topographic maps will hold the ski-run information (names of runs, level of difficulty etc) as the run only exist for 4-5 months per year. Piste maps are drawn in perspective, http://www.ski-lesarcs.com/infoski/Plan1.jpg not flat, i.e. represent a 3d map rather than a 2d map. That would make them unusable for a GPS system. Rolling Eyes

Thanks

This would work:

■ Buy the appropriate 1:25,000 map. Eg. IGN Top 25 for France - http://www.ign.fr/affiche_rubrique.asp?rbr_id=462&lng_id=EN

■ Scan the appropriate area

■ Calibrate the above in Oziexplorer

■ Ski each run, using traditional navigation methods (map, signs and piste markers) with a handheld GPS such as a Garmin or Magellan.

■ Upload the tracks to Oziexplorer

■ Add the runs, and any other required data, to the scan image in 2 above

■ Convert to OziCE and upload to an iPaq and use with a BT GPS

■ Go skiing, and keep stopping at the edge of the piste to look at your iPAQ

I think I'd rather spend my time skiing,

SJ

You can download maps of slopes here:
http://www.skimaps.com/

and then calibrate them yourself. Some are already calibrated.

One more note.
The slope maps on skimaps.com are 3D, so to really calibrate them you will have to mess with some elevation projection. I have never done that so it may get messy. But sounds really interesting.

Is this still available? Do we have another product anywhere?

The ski-nav web site is out of date and appears inactive.
