Anybody wishing to move to other software than TomRom should also look at Garmin.
Their web site talks of the Mobile 20 solution which is a smartphone (PDA?) holder with software and maps. And, of course, the maps are NAVTEQ...

Yep, Wayfinder requires GPRS, and I do not have it nor want it. Another dependency on the gigantic commercial monopolies.

I'm waiting for an open source navigator and a common map format.

Oh my God, I wish it could be true.

The only reason I run Winduhs on my 4700, is for nav. The Windows Mobile OSes have been buggy and unstable throughout the four years I've been using them.

If only I could run Opie and nav...

been using wayfinder for 2 years now, never had problems with their servers or GPRS connections.

The problem is we will never get the offboard, free to use system with constantly updated maps. Its a trade off no matter which way you go.

In an attempt to get clarification on this matter I have updated my question, as detailed below in the hope that TomTom may answer the question:

Thank you for your recent reply, but I have now received three different answers to the same question. Therefore can you confirm that the following is correct:

TomTom will continue to support PDA & Palm versions of TomTom Navigator.

TomTom have stopped developing TomTom Navigator for PDA's and have no plans to release a V6 update for PDA & Palm owners.

If not please can you confirm what the exact plans are and the estimated time scales.

Many Thanks

The definitive answer is that there will be a PDA Navigator 6 and new maps for Europe. TomTom have not turned their backs on the PDA community. I am not able to say any more, and I dont know what the release schedule will be.

I am expecting an official announcement to be made in the next few weeks.

Shall await with bated breath! would be good to hear they have not abandoned PDA support.

The points made about pirate software earlier in this thread miss one crucial point - how many of the pirate users would actually buy the product if they could not get it by other means?

Also TTN is by no means the cheapest product - if the dodgy software market did not exist price would be an issue and I suspect that a reasonable number of people would take their business elsewhere.

Also piracy does not just exist in the PDA / Smartphone market. Presumably there will be a market for dodgy versions of maps for the dedicated devices.

Yes the market is changing and SatNav is becoming a consumer product rather than a Technophile thing - most "normal" consumers do not own PDAs anyway and the PDA market is shifting more and more towards the smartphone.

Hm, so maybe we're not abandoned. If we were, it wouldn't matter so much, if the maps were only updated free.

(And tradesman, your breath is 'abated', ie stopped)

I would hope we sub normal PDA owners would continue to get support. :P

Nope. So far nobody has managed to crack the PND software. TomTom seemed to have learned from the Pocket PC fiasco.

8O To be honest theres no need for a crack for the PND, it will only be a matter of time before some creates a product activation key generator. There was one floating around for TomTom V3.

I had a conversation with a rep from TomTom a couple of days ago and asked her when v6 for ppc would be out, she told me of a new ppc/TomTom bundle that had just been announced in the US that would be running navigator v6 and said that it would be released in the UK soon. Had no exact date for me but looks promising. :D

That is the Palm Bundle, though interestingly despite the fact that it was announced in the US on the 16th August I have not seen anything on the Palm ot TomTom sites about it.
