I have been given the snooper s4 as a christmas present but have been unable to set up the device due to the software not allowing to change the serial port to allow downloads from their website(I have registered etc)
Does anyone else have this detector and if so is there an issue with their software? The help line given for Snooper is not answered despite them saying over xmas period help desk from 10-4pm.

I have a review unit here and have not had a problem updating (except for having to dig out an old system with serial ports!)

What serial port do you need to use?

the software automatically registers for com port three, on my comp it is com port 1

What Operating System is your PC?, you should be able to re-assign the COM Ports. I'll boot up the other system tomorrow and see what can be done.

thanks for the quick response.
my system is windows xp, I have spoken with the help desk for my comp and deleted and then rebooted,the system on the comp shows com port 1, the package from snooper refers to a cd disc in the box except there isn't one,the software is downloaded from their web site ,but as stated before it does not allow me an option to select the port.

very grateful for your help

With Administrator privileges, open the Device Manager (Control Panel -> System or, for a keyboard shortcut Windows and Break, then press the Device Manager button on the Hardware tab). You can then open "Ports (COM & LPT)" and double click on the various ports to open their property pages.

Somewhere on those property pages, there'll be an option to choose the port number - it may be hiding behind an "Advanced Port Settings..." button. If you want to move a port onto COM1, you'll probably have to move whatever is already on COM1 onto a higher port number first.

Other devices that use COM port numbers but aren't physical serial ports (such as internal and infrared modems) may appear elsewhere in Device Manager - though there's likely to be an option to change their COM port number somewhere in the Device Manager. Bluetooth COM port assignments may have to be changed using your Bluetooth software, though they tend to be on higher numbers already.

I believe personally that it's better to change port assignments in Windows than to try changing port numbers around in the BIOS - that can leave you truly confused as to what is what, as it's hard to know whether Windows has picked up on your changes or not. You can't change all ports around in the BIOS in any case - only those that are on the motherboard, though it may move other ports around as a consequence (another reason why I don't recommend this!)

After renumbering ports, I'd reboot to make sure that the changes have taken effect.

I like to put a label on the back of the machine indicating which port is which number if it's not obvious from what is already there (on the back of this machine, there's two serial ports marked 1 and 2 by Dell - and they really are COM1 and COM2 in Windows XP Professional).

My current machine is fairly neat. COM1 and COM2 are real 9 pin serial ports. COM3 is the cheap, nasty but functional Conexant softmodem that Dell fitted (a modem that costs less than GBP10 in a dual-processor workstation!). COM8 and COM9 are a couple of mobile phones that are used with Nokia PC Suite over infrared - it's best to create them as modems properly so that Windows doesn't complain every time they're detected.

Thank you David for the very informative response, I have been able to move the modem as suggested which allowed the snooper software to utilise the com port it kept attaching to. I have been able to download the updates for the machine, all I need to do now is to programme that for use. hopefully no more problems.
