I have looked at two camera databases for France

Alertegps.com has 946 RF, and 2141 RM
GPS Passion has 710 RF and 1999 RM

Seems GPS Passion are behind on their data. Anyone know of sites with more on the database, comments on accuracy or comments on the above?

I'm new to all this, so excuse what is no doubt a newbie question:

I've downloaded the .csv files from AlertGPS, but I have a few questions which hopefully somebody can answer (my French is non-existant):

What is the difference in the Basic and Premium databases from this site?

What are RF, RFR, RM and ZD? The icons suggest that RFR are red light cameras but the other icons don't really shed a lot of light on what I should be looking out for on my french travels.

Finally, should I load the zip file onto the Nuvi or onto the SD card onto which I will be putting the French road maps (I have the 310D)?

Thanks

I just ignored the login and clicked on "lien" under version standard which drops to another screen then clicked on "ici" next to Telecharger on the top post.

Bingo this drops to another screen, under "Versions Regulieres" click "lien" for each to download the fixed radars and the mobiles, then save the files to your machine.

Thanks

Darko

I think they are (pardon my French spelling!)
RF - Radar Fixe = Gatso type
RFR - Radar Feu Rouge = Red Light
RM - Radar Mobile = Mobile
ZD - Zone Dangereuse = Accident Blackspots??

Try saving the Tom Tom OV2 files then use Poi Edit to convert and save them as garmin .csv files - worked for my Nuvi 360!

Garmin link Quest 2 link is

http://www.alertegps.com/download_basic.asp?id_matos=71&m=1&ms=1

the form is broken on the basic download page is all..

go to the Premium download
http://www.alertegps.com/Download_index.asp?a=ar&s=&m=1&ms=2&premium=true

select the item you want,

get the URL from the browser, and "cut" the bit after the ?

e.g. "id_matos=71&m=1&ms=1"

go back to the basic download page, select an item that works, then replace the stuff after the "?" in the URL with the one you've got in the clipboard.

What is the position of using speed detectors in france? Are they allowed and is it just the radar detector ones that are illegal? Many thanks

If the French Police catch you with ANY form of camera detection, active (radar detection) or passive (GPS based) I believe that they will a) fine you heavily, probably on the spot and b) confiscate your equipment.

I beg to differ zardoz...
This was discussed at (great) length in this thread:
Any problems with the French Gendarme (Police) confiscating?

Member "999tommo" (a police officer) went to trouble to request clarification from the French Ministry of Transport, and got replies (quoted on page 4) with direct quotes from the Minister, basically confirming that passive GPS-based systems ARE legal.

Member "etters2" went through a similar process with the local Gendarmerie in this topic too:
Ils sont Legaux(they are Legal)

Both discussions conclude that the vital difference is whether the device in question DETECTS and/or INTERFERES with the radar signal, or simply INFORMS you as to its location.
As printed maps are available in France with all the camera positions marked, it is a nonsense to try to outlaw purely passive GPS systems that do the same job.
