This is not a "fix" at all!

Before, the go 910 used to turn itself off completly if you had one of the poor car mounts due to the power connectors on the back of the tomtom/mount were loose.

Now, the same problem with the mounts still exist, but instead of the tomtom turning itself off, it just stops charging so eventually if you don't notice that the mount has lost it's power, the tomtom will just discharge and eventually run out of battery power.

This is not a fix in my opinion, just a cover up!!!
Rubbish!

Actually saying that, my tomtom is working fine, straight from day one (touch wood), just feel sorry for the rest of the guys who have a dodgy go 910!

Have to say I disagree...
Tomtom themselves say in that very article:
Quote:
The new GO range is designed to switch off automatically when it detects that the cigarette lighter has no power.

To then produce a bodge that defeats that design feature to solve a hardware problem is very much a coverup, and actually quite disgraceful IMHO.

Personally, I'd have to agree with alix776 on this one.

Exactly what electronic hardware are the rest of you using that you've never encountered a software fix for a hardware problem? Computers, servers, routers, iPods, PDAs, etc., have been using this strategy for years. Is it a hardware problem? Of course it is. Does this software solution correct the hardware problem? No. Does it "fix" the problem? Yes.

I suspect that TomTom will correct this hardware problem on future X10's, but I wouldn't call it a coverup or think it outrageous that they've released a software fix for the problem until they make an official (and no doubt expensive) decision on what to do for current customers with poorly designed mounts.

No, it doesn't fix the problem, it masks it. There shouldn't be a loss of electrical connection between the device and the cradle. It's not a fix, but it is a good enough solution to the annoying problem.

Exactly. It's a fix -- not a permanent solution. However, hardware companies use software fixes for hardware problems all the time. It's a nice way for them to postpone a true solution when they know it's going to cost them a small fortune to truly fix the problem.

Someone on their quality control/testing department should be fired.

Well, bad designs are made all the time -- it's the testers and QC people who are supposed to figure out that the design stinks on ice.

When I was a network consultant, I accepted a temporary position as a QC tester for a development company -- never again! That was horrible. They should've just given me a name tag that said "SCAPEGOAT" as my title from the very beginning.

Personally, I'd love that job at a company like TomTom...getting to play with all the new toys, tell the designers what works and doesn't, etc. Every day would be a play day!

Ah, but customer support doesn't fall under the testing/quality control department, which would be the best part! I've spent most of my life dealing with customers, who are usually wrong despite the popular phrase, "The customer is always right."

Of course, when I'm the customer, I am always right, so.... ;)

I don't have a X10 model so don't have experience of this fix. Does it simply transfer to battery power when the power stops, which is not a good idea, or does it wait for a few seconds to see if power is restored before switching off (which would be sensible). Even more sensible if it gives a warning that it is about to switch off, which would allow you to override it if you wish to transfer to battery power.
