The concept of using topographical mapping on mobile phones was first introduced by Maptech in the USA, but map data was never available for the UK. Well finally this has now changed. Both Memory-Map and Anquet have products that place GB Ordnance survey maps on a mobile phone and allow you to see your exact location based on GPS position data.

When we were at the Ordnance Survey Outdoors show last month Memory-Map were showing amongst other things a version of Memory-Map Navigator running on a WM based Smartphone. This software is now available as a FREE download to anyone who has a Memory-Map Version 5 license.

Click here for the Memory-Map version 5 upgrade page. The latest version of MM5 includes Support for both the WM Smartphone and also the Garmin Edge 305.

Lutz has a solar power supply, but it probably will not be effective over here...

It doesn't hammer the battery in the same way as on PDA units, the screen regularly turns itself off, my SPVc600 will run with Bluetooth switched on (for the GPS) all day off a single charge, external battery packs and car charger lead is another option for this country, solar panel is great where the sun shines (seldom does when I go out walking).

One strange this I have noticed with the smart phone software is that if you "Mark position" then select that mark for the mark you wish to go to, the track screen will show any where between 50 to 180M out of position relative to the GPS present position? even when you haven’t moved.

The map is spot on as I placed the GPS unit on the Triangulation pillar at 53deg 52,797N 2deg 39.50W and the image is spot on the point, the amount of error appears to be random, using it to locate the car I was over 150M away from where I left the vehicle when the screen was displaying I had returned to my mark point.

As for installing it four resets of the phone before I got it to work - will write up the use of it later today as I have a number of screen shots to accompany this. Mike

If your phone battery only lasts you an hour, then you need a new battery or a new phone Smile Memory Map is also much less CPU intensive than TomTom etc and thus should save on battery power. Memory Map basically just scrolls around a series of pregenerated bitmap images. TomTom has to constantly generate vector images several times a second.

monkmaster - you may want to look at http://www.viewranger.com

This does OS topographic mapping with GPS navigation for the UK on Nokia handsets such as the 6680 and N70. You can exchange tracklogs and routes between Memory Map and ViewRanger through the shared GPX file format.

Yeah, many thanks Gripp. Viewranger looks like the business. How come it's so hard to find programs to do GPS mapping on the web?

Having used ViewRanger for a couple of weeks now I find it a very good product. It arrived within 24 hrs of my ordering it, and it works straight out of the box. It comes with a very good .PDF manual too.

The UK is divided up into 23 separate maps, so with a 1Gb card in my NOkia 6630 I can load most of the southern England maps and pan or travel seamlessly across the country.

I also have TTM5 on the same card which means I can navigate somewhere, then swap to ViewRanger to guide me over fields on a country walk.

Although the basic funtion of the program is straight-forward, it pays to print and read the manual thoroughly to understand the many functions ViewRanger has. Tracks and routes can be imported and exported into .GPX format so it's fully compatible with Memory Map. POI's can also be loaded.

I also have the MemoryMap PocketPC version on my MitacMio, but the extra functionality of ViewRanger, and convenience of having to carry only one device, means that the Mio doesn't have many outings these days.

hello

im new to this forum, and have an N70, that id like to use just really to get OS refs for mountain biking.

ive got memory map 2004 on my pc, but it seems the update is just for 05 or 06 i reckon (v5?)

so with this in mind, would you recommend viewranger for me? im not toobothered about proper maps, id just like to be able to read my OS ref if im ever not sure of my location. and maybe on a ride, select to choose a marker, that i can reference back to after the ride, just to make sure i know exactly where ive been.

viewranger or MM for this?

thanks a lot

MM do not have a version for Nokia/Symbian (only PocketPC).

Why not download a trial version of Viewranger and the trial map and see if does what you require?

thanks for that mate. i actually have downloaded that trial version, but when i tried to instal it on my pc (i think it needs installing on pc too doesnt it?) my pc said something about needing the .NET framework installed and gave a link to it. but i didnt understand the link, so as it stands, ive got an email telling me thanks for trying software, (and i think i only have so long before it stops working), but no action :-(

any advice to get me going here?

thanks a lot

No, it installs nothing on the PC. You just want the .SIS file which you install onto the phone via Nokia's PC Suite.

Or just copy the .SIS file onto your Nokia's memory card using a card reader and install it from the phone.

Can't remember if Nokia's PC Suite requires Microsoft's .NET stuff, but the .NET stuff can be downloaded from the MS site for free - and is required by many applications these days.
