My understanding is there's two suppliers of TMC info in the UK, and depending on the GPS manufacturer you will recieve a subscription to one of them.

If these services are not encrypted, is there anything stopping you receiving the other service ie if you purchase a TMC receiver licensed for iTIS can you also receive the Trafficmaster signals if you re-tune the receiver ?

You are quite correct that in the UK these signals are not encrypted. How it works (very simply) is this:

- They (iTIS or TM) broadcast the data (along the lines of "traffic from location 1001 to 1003, 10 minutes delay").
- The software then has what's called a TMC location data table which allows it to work out where location 1001 and 1003 are, and hence where the traffic is
- Having worked it out, it displays it on the screen, and may well suggest an alternative route.

Both companies produce a separate TMC location data table, and they are not compatible with each other.

The companies that have the license, eg Garmin have a license from Trafficmaster - are allowed to put the TMC location data table into their map data (*) and provide it to you. As (in this example, Garmin) don't have a license with iTIS, they cannot and do not supply the iTIS TMC location data table. As such, even if you re tune to the other signal, the unit does not have this location table to convert the information into anything meaningful.

(*) Many take the original data, both the maps, POIs, and the TMC data and change it into a different format, so you can't even use the file from another system to fool the software.

So, no, you cannot swap to the other data and expect it to work.

For completeness: In some European countries, there is a single TMC location data table, and certain traffic suppliers supply some or all of the data - in these cases, some do encrypt the data, and it's the decryption code that is what is paid for.

hi,

i know that Garmin have a license from Trafficmaster, but on my Garmin Nuvi 310 in traffic menu it say RAC Live (lifetime subscription) and when the traffic button is clicked it shows traffic (all 100 miles away) and a 2D map view it shows some traffic, now on the navigation screen it does not show the traffic or has the traffic button for reroute.

is this because Garmin does not have a License with RAC live????

if i subscribe to traffic master would the above start to work????

last point i have a GTM 12 with my garmin is does not mention this on the traffic master website does it make a difference????

The RAC Traffic Service is supplied by TrafficMaster. It is one and the same.
