I had a few minutes spare and with a Torx driver in hand, I cound not resist a little poke around inside the TomTom 910,

This is not in depth, I have only gone to the first level inside, in a few days I will probably go down to removing the hard drive, but this is it for today!,

There are small pictures below, if you click the link below each picture it will open a larger version of the picture in a new window!

The 4 Torx Screws to remove the case are hidden under the rubber feet, the feet can be prised up with a fingernail without damage to remove the screws

Great post 'Flashyphotos'... your brave, it looks like a very well packaged product though...... at least we will be able to replace the battery when it expires. maybe even upgrade the hard disk although I am not sure why you would want to,

Cheers,

Bruce

Yes it seems well produced, it came apart with ease and seems to have been well thought out. No real sign of last minute revisions for saying its a very early model.

The battery and Hard drive are both well buried, and I want to examine the ribbon cables in detail before I disconnect them to get to these items., so will wait till I have more time in a few days.

One Anomoly so far,

On the GPS Antenna the unit is refered to as "Valencia" Manufacturers Code for the device.

On the Main Board it is refered to as "Valancia" ?.

And yes it went back together in 2 minutes and works fine Laughing

Did you get in far enough to see if the hard drive was indeed such, or a microdrive (similar looking to compact flash)?

No it looks like a Laptop type drive not a microdrive, there are no 20Gb microdrives out there yet as far as I know,

It looks like a standard Laptop drive, I did not get far enough to see manufacturer or connection type, Thats my next challenge..

Thanks for that, didn't realize it was 20GB, not been following closely.

I'm amazed that anyone would dismantle a new £500 satnav simply out of curiosity.
Great pics though. Still wonder why after the excellent TT-One they couldn't make the x10 series pocket sized, for that quick trip in to pay for fuel etc??

I admire his skill and inquisitiveness. But I wouldn't leave him alone in the room with my TV Laughing

What else is technology for if you can't take it to bits and figure out if it can be amended or abused!

Sorry maybe its just me, always from being a kid the first thing I did with a new toy was attack it with a screwdriver, Darn do you learn not to lean on the 240V stuff whilst its plugged in fairly quick Embarassed

I'm holding my laptop hard drive up to the unit now and this is the only way it could fit...

What with the heat given off by hard drives and the sun on a hot day bouncing off the screen and unit, i can see a few hard drives going down and phone calls to tomtom for warranty repairs... Rolling Eyes

Probably not. PVPs such as Archos AV400 and Epson P2000 have had this configuration in tight enclosures for several years now. The only thing I find with the Archos is that the screen may develop a tiny blob in the centre, as if oil is pressed between two glass layers. But this is after many hours of use (usually at reduced cabin pressure) and returns to normal soon after. Portable HDDs are far more resilient than most of us appreciate.

Bluetooth Antenna

-----------

This is the remote RF control antenna, not the Bluetooth one. The BT antenna is a small rectangular thing in the right bottom corner in pic http://www.flashyphotos.com/910/910-10.jpg

Nope, you're not alone Smile
When I was about ten, I got a cassette player for xmas (SERIOUSLY hi-tech in those days) and had to promise my parents I wouldn't try to take it apart, like everything else.
Sure enough, a few days later I snuck it up to my bedroom, with my favourite combined torch and screwdriver set (remember those?), and whipped the back off.

Inside was a lovely note from my Dad, basically saying "Caught red-handed". I laughed so much, I just had to go downstairs and admit to my crime! Laughing

At about the same age, my mate (and partner in crime), got into the habit of stripping wires with his teeth. Need I continue? 8O

Oh yes that tingle of 240v on the gums, nothing like it for making you quickly realise its not such a good idea!. At 10 I tried removing a broken plug from a socket with a metal knife!. Rolling Eyes

Yes thats the way it fits, although the solid alloy chasis should disipate heat well.

I have a 910 and I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade the HD to a larger capacity eg. 60 or 80gb.
I have a very large music collection (about 40gb) which will not fit on the 20gb standard HD, if the 910 uses a laptop drive it should be possible to exchange the drive with one of a higher capacity.
I already have a creative zen vision 30gb but it would be nice to have all of my music and and navigation on one unit.
I've had a look on ebuyers site and you can pick up a 40gb for about £40 with 100gb for about £90.
There is a smaller 1.8inch drive available which is about £80 for 40gb not sure what size the 910 uses though

i'd suggest the drive is a 1.8" type, as used in ipod's, etc

can't see why it can't be swapped out for a larger one!, they're a standard fitting
