Know this is probs a bit of a bizarre question, but...

Told mum and dad to buy this refurbished Medion PDA before Xmas thinking it had bluetooth and the GPS receiver was either inbuilt or wireless. They had planned to use it for walking and biking.

Anyway, worst case scenario has evolved: It's not got bluetooth, the gps receiver is wired and the only way you can power it is through the cigarette lighter in the car.

I've just seen em, so they can't send it back.

Wondered if there was any way to either buy a wired GPS receiver that you can recharge and then use out and about, OR somehow feed battery power to the GPS receiver that otherwise needs connecting to the ciggie lighter?

Bizarre!

And thanks.

Hi there.

Thanks for that tip, Mike.

Unfortunately the problem is that the GPS itself only has a car cigarette lighter connection so it would be quite tricky to work out a. what voltage it needs, and b. how on earth to get rid of the cig lighter connection and replace it with a conventional battery box.

Any ideas? Anyone else come up against this prob?

Answer to A
Its 12V DC (13,8V with the engine running)
Answer to B
Use the Cig lighter connector to couple it to the battery box as I have done. You need the connector as it does more than just "Connect" within the plug is actually a voltage regulator to maintain a constant supply to the unit at the required voltage (usually 5,0V but this isn't always the case) - Mike

Have you considered useing a cheap hand held GPS ??I don't know what type of connector is on your PDA but I have made up a lead between my ipaq 2210 and a yellow Etrex for use while on foot .The battery lasts for around 16 hours which is much beter than the 4 - 5 hours of the ipaq .If you are not handy with a soldering iron there are several firms that make Garmin to PDA cables so you could try some of the links from this site or try www.gpsbitz.co.uk who are very helpfull if you call them..

What GPS is it?
Is the cigar adapter and GPS all in one cable or is it connected via PS2 connector?
