Why bother with a PDA

I have been spending some time exploring using my Ipaq HX4700 as a GPS . But the cost of the software, GPS receiver, SD cards and powered mount will be about the same as a dedicated GPS. in addition installation is more complex, compatability is a risk and reliability does not seem 100%.

As a long term PDA nut (going back to Newtons) can someone convince me as to why it is is worth persevering with the PDA route?.

You seem to have done the research and come to the correct conclusion. I think that on balance it is probably not worth going down the PDA route these days. The only reason I can think of is that if you always carry a PDA anyway then it may be a bit less extra to carry around. Integrated units do seem to be more reliable and easier to use.

I am just switching over from using a PDA to a phone for GPS routing myself because I do always carry the phone anyway. The phone plus GPS receiver combined are still lighter and less bulky than most other combinations or integrated units. However, from reports I have read this is probably the least reliable combination!
