We are intending to publish a summarised list of changes. It is not clear yet as to what detail we will go into we are still working on the software to update the system. It may be an arbitary split by lat/lon with details of additions/changes/removals.

Hope this answers your question.

Well you would say that wouldn't you.

I got my TTG for Xmas so just missed out on that opportunity. Since then I've started to become more and more active here and despite the limited time involved I've already been able to help a few newbies with answers to common questions. That's probably because I'm a quick learner when it comes to technology, I'm very used to technology based forums, and often spend a lot of time in them helping others out where I can (Promixis NetRemote for example).

So in say 1 years time when I've put a lot of effort into this forum I'll still be paying for updates whereas someone who has already submitted one camera location last month and then contributes nothing further gets it free for LIFE. Now that's doesn't sound like a recipe for a happy community to me.

I like the idea of rewarding the efforts of past contributors but IMO your proposed model has gone a bit OTT. A more realistic idea might be to offer 1 month free for every camera location previously submitted up to a maximum of 12 months free. Then they are on the same playing field as everyone else. Otherwise it's a big kick in the teeth for newbies. Remember that everyone has to be a newbie sometime and some of them may end up adding a lot of value to your site so they should be valued and (eventually) should be able to have the same benefits as anyone else.

In the original thread, my view was that it was wrong for PGPSW to slap a charge onto people who contributed to a community based project. The lifetime 'free' membership offer is a reasonable response and goes some way to restoring matters for people who have contributed. I applaud it.

Unfortunately though, I still think this is going to be a big mistake in the long run. When the charge was proposed, I asked myself 'How valuable is a monthly update to me?' The answer surprised me. "Not very." I'm no longer a road-warrior doing 30k business miles a year. 99% of my driving these days is on roads that I know very well, with cameras (and talivan hidey holes) that are well known. I don't habitually set up my kit for every journey, and probably use it once or twice a month in anger. I suspect that many of the 'new crowd' who have received TomTom's from Santa will behave similarly, once the 'new toy' factor has worn off. They might buy an update once or twice, but then they'll forget about it.

The long and the short of it is that I'll be happy to stick with the January database for a few months, and maybe consider forking out a couple of quid for an update prior to going on a long journey - but probably no more than twice a year. If your business plans and income projections are founded on "everyone that downloaded the free database is now going to give us 2 quid every month and we'll be rich....", I think you're going to be very disappointed.

If I could see that the members area delivered plenty of 'value add', I might be prepared to stump up the 19 quid subscription fee on that basis. I'll simultaneously keep an eye on the community database offering on 'the other site', and if it gets somewhere, I'll be happy to switch to that - as will many people, I suspect. With commercialism comes risks as well as profits.

As a keen reader and user of the website (albeit a lurker) since TomTom V2 came out, I find it quite sad that the community has lost something in the last couple of weeks. I hope that the mods will nurse their bruises, and realise just why they received such a kicking...

Best of luck with your plans guys. I hope that it doesn't blow up in your face.

Chris

At the end of the day we that oppose will do as we see fit, just as those that are au fait with it will do. PGPSW will do the same, so we all move on.
At the end of the day oldies/newbies alike if this new base gets going then there it is a free option which we can all contribute too with no fear of charging.
To end, i am entitled to a free membership, but i wont be taking it up, as for the £2 monthlies, who knows, the last two days i have been using the TomTom official one (which i got 12 months for free) and surprisingly it is a lot better than it was in the beginning.

Just to show i am human, Darren there is a camera on the A22 at Halland which is on the database, well it is no longer there so you can erase that one.
There guys, no hard feelings.

I have been following this debate for a while now.

Because I haven't submitted new cameras as I rarely use TomTom, (most of my journeys are local, there is only a few cameras and those are well known ones in Brighton.) I have lost out on any updates.
I have been a member of the forum for a long time. My initial area of interest (and one i use more than TT) is with mapping software, Anquet and Multimap. As I had the interest in the technology and some of the kit I purchased TT only just before Christmas.
I do feel that I have been kicked in the teeth, but on the other hand for the twice a year that I may use TT in anger, I will have to "put up and shut up" so yes you may get my £2.00 once a while, but it is with a small grudge!

(I also do appreciate all the arguements, I know its cheaper than a pint of beer etc. but I wanted to get this off my chest!!)

Cheers for listening, and I hope that everyone has a happy and prosperous new year!!

So much for this being a forum.

I notice that PGPSW are also deleting posts to this thread which they don't happen to agree with. This type of activity just confirms that this site is no longer a community based site.

No, I don't like it. Your post falls within the guidelines for deletion; read the Forum rules for clarification. Please can you give me some examples to support your claim that I have some expertise in the matter of deleting posts? I am not the only Moderator on this site.

Besides, you've made it clear that you hope this site falls flat on its face. Why are you hanging around? Surely you don't want to be associated with something you hope fails?

I think this post raises very valid points. The proposed system is very generous to people who contributed in the past, even it it was only 1 camera. New users are not rewarded much at all in comparison.

Also, I contributed some money via the paypal link a while ago. It is proposed that people like myself who contributed financially get 12 months free access. However, a user who contributed just 1 camera gets life access! How is this fair??

I get the feeling that no more arguaments are being listened to but PLEASE consider how unfair the proposed system is.

What happens if I pay to download the database and I find that a significant percentage of the cameras around the area where I live are not featured or inaccurately placed? Will I be entitled to a refund? When the database was free people didn't mind if it wasn't accurate (indeed this inspired us to post corrections). However, now it's purely commercial, will you be offering a full commercial service ie. guaranteeing quality with refunds where standards are not met?

I fully appreciate your need to be self-sustaining but if you are seeking to pursue a commercial career with this database then you need to take on the responsibilities that entails and that delivering a high level of service from day one. It will be no good saying, "Well, the database is 60% accurate but will get better" because if I pay for it then I want it to meet high levels of accuracy from day one. You can no longer rely on peoples' good will to ignore deficiences.
