I have just spent the past week in Northern Ireland on a project and was seriously let down by my TomTom Go. I have the latest UK map, but this map only displayed the major roads. I did work in various locations in Belfast and Derry and had to ASK FOR DIRECTIONS!
OK, the TomTom took me from city to city, but not to my final destinations. At least the city centre of Belfast was covered of some sorts, but the hotel I was staying in was not, so again, I had to ask for directions.
I was under the impresssion that Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but it looks like TomTom don't think so.
Does any of the other satnav devices have better maps for NI compared to TomTom, or does nobody care about NI?
Any other comments on the quality of the TomTom maps covering NI?

Maps in Ireland as a whole are not good.
The map that TomTom sell is a Great Britain map. NI is not part of GB 
The "Irish problem" is lack of base data from Ireland OS, I don't think it was available to third parties.
The new maps that are just being sold by TomTom (upgrade coming soon at a cheaper price?) have more detail in Ireland, but I would wait for a guinea pig to report on how much better they are.

I'll be that guinnea pig 8)
The upgrades to the GB map do have a lot of improvements on N.Ireland, but, it's still quite poor in comparison to the rest of the UK mapping.
It does have a lot of smaller roads and streets added to it, but it's still mostly main roads only.
I'm impressed with the maps in comparison to the pre-loaded ones supplied, but there is still a lot of work to be done to make it worthwhile buying a tomtom if you live here in NI.
I couldn't recommend one to someone living here, I'm lead to believe that the mapping for Ireland north and south is poor in general. I'm not sure why? Maybe us Ulster people don't get lost as much and so we dont really need sat. nav.  |
