Using the new maps (v6.32) and the 5.21 patch, TTN5 is now almost running as it should have been running originally.

For example, A61 West Way in Barnsley. The roundabout was removed a little while ago, but the version 5.71 maps were showing the roundabout still existed. In the 6.32 maps, it's now gone :-)

The maps are definately newer, I'm not sure how new, but most of the errors in the older maps that I were aware of have definately been corrected. I say most as some of the previous errors I've not yet had a chance to check.

I've noticed the direction signs have been updated too (I think). For example when heading towards the motorway, instead of showing just a roundabout and the approximate exit for the slip road, it shows the roundabout and the exit as before but with a small arrow pointing towards a motorway sign....pretty cool. Not noticed it before but I could be wrong.

With 5.21 it certainly seems smoother and faster loading and the GPS driver appears more stable with better fixes.

Okay, it's still not perfect, but it's 100% better.

Where did you get new maps from?

Cheers,

Steve.

It was actually from another thread (nice one Zeena):

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=31543

But the URL is http://tomtom.com/plus/service.php?ID=10&Language=1

They do cost, but it was less than the upgrade to TTN5 and it is the Plus map and you can continue to download it upto a year after ordering.

Really? 8O . So it's basically like a years subscription to map updates? Sounds excellent if true Smile

After upgrading to 5.21, I used it for the first time last weekend.

Not in my experience. The reception seems just as flakey, and continues to drop out completely - even with a clear view of the sky.

The map display goes completely beserk for a while before finding where it is supposed to be.

I have also noticed that the display will show me ahead of my actual position, and then appear to reverse until it's correct.

Surely TomTom shouild be addressing these fundamental flaws in its software as a priority !!

Sad

Would have been nice if they had given us free map updates for a period with the product...

Cheers,

Steve.

I have exactly the same problem still, even after upgrading to 5.21. It happens that often that I just ignore now.

Mine's fine, but I use Palm devices - Treo 650 & T3.

So, do you think doing a factory reset, and then a complete reinstallation will solve the problem ??

I would obviously have to re-install all my POI's / Voices etc again.

I've just been thinking (yes it did hurt and I need a lie down. Laughing Out Loud)

Some, if not most of us bought a previous version of TTN with an iPaq or whatever, which maybe cost around £300 or more.

TomTom then released TTN5, which cost around £50 (from what I remember).

If you installed the plus maps, the SD card supplied originally needed to be upgraded as it was too small at 128MB (costs very, but say £20 at the time)

You then purchase the new maps at a cost of £40.

Added up, that's over £400...for an "entry level" Sat Nav, which leaves me with a serious question..."Was it worth it?"

That's cheap, for those of us Palm users, the only supported Palm by Tom Tom originally was the T3, that set me back £300 (ok I already had that, even so ttn was the killer app the T3 needed), Tom Tom for Palm BT cost me approx. £260, then there was the upgrade, £50 and now the updated maps @ £40. That's not including a new wired receiver @£90.... and then upgrade the T3 to a Treo 650...car cradle....

I'n not going to add that lot up!

The T3 was the 'entry level' for Palm users of Tom Tom when it was released last year.

Was it worth it? At the time yes, but if starting out now doubtful as technology has moved on. If I was starting out from scratch I might go for an all in one unit.

GPS is the way forward & makes my work so much easier & the biggest advantage - no more arguments with my wife who, like most women, can't read maps.

Wow That's a lot of money.

I bought Zire 72 as GPS navigation pak from Palm in US at buy.com. It was 385$ - 50 $ mail in rebate.

Came with Zire 72, Holux GR-230 BT receiver rebranded by Palm., TTN navigator 2004 with US / Canada maps and Arkon mount and charging cable for palm and GPS receiver. Upgraded to TTN5 for 5$ ( Not much change in maps though)

Yes. And that is £ not $ which makes it even more!

5$ was a very cheap upgrade to ttn 5. I wish mine cost me approx. £2.50 -£3.00!

That option wasn't available in the UK when I bought Tom Tom navigator 4 for palm T3.

Bundles are usually cheaper as well.
