Magellan eXplorist 100 as my first GPS?

I am a keen walker/hiker and am looking to get into the world of GPS but am struggling with my first purchase. From the limited reading I've managed to do the basic handhelds would seem to be enough to get me going, but which one?

I've been looking at the Magellan eXplorist range, and more specifically the 100 (the bright orange one). What are peoples thoughts on this one? Is it any good? Is it the right one for me? I've also been looking at the Garmin etrex.

either of the two gps' you mention would be an ideal introduction to navigating by gps.
another option is the magellan sportrak or sportrak map, which are tough bits of kit and well able to take the rigours of hill walking.
the one problem I have with the explorist range is the rechargable onboard battery. If it runs out on the hill it's useless, I would prefer the option of just replacing the batteries, I always carry a spare set for my sportrak color.
