Hi
while being very technically proficient with PC's i'm very very new to this whole GPS business, while browsing Ebuyer I saw the Acer N35 (http://www.savastore.com/productinfo/product.aspx?catalog_name=Savastore&product_id=10280174&pid=44

I was thinking a PDA would be great as I can take it with me instead of leaving it in the car (I dont have the most secure car in the world..)

I was telling a friend about my find and he said that the processor speed is too slow (266mhz) and it probably wont be able to load the maps fast enough, and also if I wanted to upgrade the software to another version it'll probably not run it due to the slow processor speed.
While i'm familiar with desktop/laptop processor speeds I have no idea what is good or not on a PDA and what the requirements are for GPS, I mean I certainly dont want to be waiting for maps to load and miss a turn or something, similiarly I dont want to be locked into one software package due to limitations of hardware.

Another thing is i'v heard some bad stories which mention that the software this comes with cant handle roundabouts (destinator I believe) and sometimes takes you on longer routes then whats necessary, the whole point of me buying a GPS system was so that I can save time as i'm rubbish with maps.

and last of all I just wanted to ask, do I have to have the antenna on the PDA in direct line of the sattelites, e.g. right near the windscreen, if so I'll probably need a car sunction mount for it or something!.

Any help will be very very appreciated, I am totally lost at the moment!

I have no experience of this either but have been considering it. Ebuyer are selling it:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=8938292211&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=82044

and the reviews are very positive. There are many reviews and you should be able to read all the pro's and cons there.

Destinator has mixed reviews, but still most people are happy - no mention of slow map loading. You could install Tom Tom if you wanted (the software is very cheap on ebay). You would have to buy a cradle, but it still looks like god value.

I would expect people here would have more experience than me, but there seem to be many more enquirers than responders.

By the way, ebuyer are excellent, delivery is very fast and cheap. I have spent about £2000 with them in the last year and they have never let me down. I had one faulty item and they arranged collection and replacement very promptly. Service is all via email, but it works well.

I have also bought from Savastore, and whilst ok cannot match ebuyer for delivery speed and cost, or after sales service.

Hi,

I have got an Acer N30 GPS Kit. PDA and seperate GPS unit.
Some of the draw backs of the N35 are:

Intergrated GPS - If you have got any issues, the whole PDA has to go back to Acer, take it from me, the customer care department lacks in customer care.

No Bluetooth - Can not connect to your mobile for GPRS Dialup.

The N30 and N35 are more than capable of running TomTom V3 and V5. I am running V5 on mine presently without any problems.

It is not the fastest PDA available, but if you are simply going to use it for SatNav then it is more than capable,

Regards

I've had an N35 for about three months now, and it works like a dream. The only time the cpu speed is likely to be a problem is if you try to play some of the high end 3d games on it. For running the suppplied Destinator software, and Tomtom (sold seperately), its more than enough. Its succesfully navigated me from Grimsby down to Disneyland Paris, with out any trouble at all. It even kept me entertained on the Channel Tunnel with an hours worth of video clips of football matches that I'd installed on the memory card, although it needs pointing out that I'd bought an additional 1gb memory card :D . The supplied 256mb card has Destinator already installed with about 56mb spare.

I wavered on which way to go, and almost bought a PDA with bluetooth and a seperate gps reciever. But practicality won out. The whole thing is there in your hand, in one unit. I know full well that if I had a seperate reciever I would either forget to take it with me or loose it.

The only thing it lacks, which I needed, is wireless networking, but that is easily overcome by buying an sdio network card, which slots into the memory port (ebuyer had one for £20). Presumably theres also a Bluetooth card on the market as well, but as I don't need one I haven't looked.

scrumble - maybe a dumb question, but am I right, if you use the network card you cant have the mapping software at the same time. Have you used a network card with it yet?

With my setup I do have to take the card with the GPS software out to use the wifi card, as they both use the same slot. Not that this is a problem for me, as I don't envisage myself ever needing to use the GPS and surf the net at the same time (Never drive and surf kids Wink )

This because my wifi card doesn't have any memory on it, but for £20 I'm not complaining. Ebuyer did also have another wifi card, which had 256mb on board, which is enough to take Destinator. IIRC the price was £89

I have used it on a network., and it worked pretty well. The only downside being that the version of Windows on the N35 doesn't allow for viewing in landscape mode, so a bit of scrolling is necessary for viewing all the page.

For the money its an excellent piece of kit. Like I said, I almost bought a PDA with seperate bluetooth GPS, but by the time I added up all the various bits and pieces I would have been paying at least twice as much.

The N35 even if it does only have a 266 mhz processor is still a fine tool for GPS'ing. It runs TomTom 5 with no slowdown again memoryMap 2k4 it handles with ease.
As a PDA it's umm well. mediocre. It does fall over on some 3d games and more intensive apps can take a while to do what's needed.
All in all as a PDA GPS all in one solution it's brill. As a
