Hi, another newbie 
I've been following this excellent website for a wee while now and it helped me convince myself I needed a Quest!!
Purchased one last week and very impressed with it so far........slowly ploughing through the manual!!
I've got Version 6 on board but waiting for an upgrade. I presume that the upgrade not only have increased coverage but also has updated roads etc.??
Another question - I am using it on a Yamaha TDM850, waiting for a Ram cradle and handlebar mount system and intent to change over the original car power lead into the cradle. I don't (or could be persuaded otherwise) want to install helmet audio. As Skippy pointed out in another post, the unit switches on the backlight when a direction change etc. is due and if the unit is in the line of vision then that's fine for now. How do I get this facility if I power the Quest from the ciggy charger as it only seems to do it if powered from the internal battery?

There are some features of the Quest that are only enabled when the external power is absent, such as the internal 'beep' warning when a turn is imminent. It could be that backlight switching is part of the same deal - it would make sense. Try emailing Ollie Stone at Garmin Technical Support - he's pretty good though it can take a couple of days to get a reply - if there's no answer forthcoming here.

dandywarhol, when you got your Quest, which version of the voice announcements did it have?
When I first got mine I took it for a drive with a mate and we listened to what it said and both of us looked at each other and said "WTF did it say?". The voice quality was really bad.
That night I got the latest firmware and voices (3.0?) from Garmin and installed them and I haven't had a problem with it since.
I suspect that the firmware/voice upgrade fixed the quality problems, but I'm not sure. If it did, then it's worth warning other Quest users that they should get the latest voices because the quality is much better.

I concur that the latest voice files do significantly improve the audio quality. It's gone from unsaleable to adequate.

Yeah, I updated it skippy......3.40 I think........it'd a bit better but just adaquate as DPL says........I'd just like to use the backlight facility that prompts you before POIs or major junctions but with the system wired to the bike 12v.
Roughly how many hours of battery life do you get with the backlight coming on in this way? |

I guess that's a function of how many turns you make and how often the backlight comes on...In my experience running with the backlight on full all the time gives you around 6 hours from fully charged. With the backlight off (it's not needed in daylight) I've seen over 12 hours with some life still left.

I left my Quest switched on (backlight off), sitting by the window to see how long it ran. The tracklog logged data for about 17 hours before it died. The backlight came on from time to time when it lost sat lock, but I don't know how often that happened.
You could get the Quest to simulate a route and see how far it gets before it dies. The trouble with that is that the GPS receiver isn't running so the power drain is a lot less.
I used my old GPS-V (which ran on AAs) on a few long trips and if I got on the motorway and it said "drive 100 miles then turn left", I would switch it off for (ahem) an hour or so to save batteries.
Try it and see might be the only answer! :D

I have mine on a TDM850 and was wondering where you mounted yours?
Mine if just left on the left hand handlebare clamp, and blocks the bottom of the speedo (15mph and below).
I have the heated grip control in the middle.
Surely when the unit is powered, you can have the backlight is on all the time. Well that is what I thought. |

Mine is on the left handlebar, between the hand grip and the clutch lever mount I think. I should do a photo of it sometime.
My old GPS used to obscure the clocks a bit but as long as I can see the "important" parts then I don't mind.
You can always set one of the fields to display Speed and read your speed off the GPS...

I liked the idea of having the backlight come on to grab your attention when a turn is due, something that you can do when it's self powered.
Here's a couple of pics of the Ram mount U bolt and 149 extension. I used the car 12v power cable and wired a cigar lighter socket under the seat. Also use that to charge a minidisc player and phone using a voltage converter.
Mounted on the right means I can see the gauges (temp gauge just!) but makes using the buttons more difficult on the move - althoug hwith gloves it's pretty difficult anyway...........one day I'll be wearing the back end of a bus |
