Hi

I have finally decided to supplement my maps with a GPS for walking and have bought a Magellan GPS315, which seems to give me what I want at a price I can afford.

I would like to know how people normally carry their GPS'. I know that in theory they are supposed to have line of site, yet mine works fine when propped up in the cup holder in my car. I tried wandering around with it in my pocket and got nothing, but I don't really want to carry it in hand all the time.

Your views would be appreciated.

Ian

Hi Ian,

My handheld GPS unit is a Garmin 12XL, I used it in the car propped up on the dashboard and with a power lead plugged into the cigar lighter socket.

Although I don't do much walking, I use it for various tasks, one of which included noting locations of items found with my metal detector.

When I have gone out walking I use the OS map all the time and occasionally check my location on the route with the GPS unit. when you use it every so often it doesn't take long to fix onto the satellites. Once I know where I am, I switch the GPS unit off to conserve the batteries.

HTH.
