All,
In reading up on the subject of SatNav and stuff, it is proving really difficult to quantify the date of the map data contained within the current version of any software.
TomTom use messages such as "The maps we use are the most up-to-date maps and provided by Tele Atlas, a worldwide leading provider of digital map databases." In reading about the new Destinator PN, I recall reading on a website somewhere that the map data is Navteq, Q4 2004 - so pretty recent.
Yet, we all know that the map data is often an earlier version of the current map database. I don't know about TeleAtlas, but the latest update to Navteq data is Feb 2005, when they announced 100% coverage of Italy.
And so it got me thinking, is there anywhere that details the date of the map data for the current product. Had a skim through the forums here - but couldn't find anything - so, the request is to ask all out there to share this.
Or, for this to be incorporated into future reviews. Moderators - any thoughts on soliciting some feedback on what all of the users of PGW would like to see in a review - constructive views only. Could do it through polls???

It's very difficult to objectively measure that. As you may know TeleAtlas and NavTEQ are employing surveying crews that drive all the streets themselves to verify the areas. Even when you submit a map error report it needs to be confirmed by them physically.
This makes map accuracy a very patchy thing - it all depends where they have driven recently. As an example, in my neighborhood they definitely have driven through at least five years ago. Every "new" map contains exactly the same mistakes as the very first TomTom map.
In other areas they may have driven through just recently, and the maps will be decent.
Another aspect is the map compilation. There are so many parameters when you bake a map, and it's well possible that later compilations are worse than earlier compilation (dropping one set of data in favor of another one etc). Difficult to grasp too.
In short, you should realisticly expect maps that are at least two years old, no matter what the marketing blabla says.
As I said in the beginning, we don't know how to objectively measure that. Any ideas? _________________ Lutz
