Ok - I've got things working

The 2Gb SD card was not write protected, and had about 450 Mb of free space, and could have files read from and written to in Windows XP. There were no hidden files. ...

Just tried the new Route Planner using FireFox 3.0.6 on Ubuntu 8.04.

All seemed to work OK, and a planned route was correctly saved with the .gpx extension.
