|
|
I am using a Rikaline Bluetooth GPS system which is working fine with Tomtom 3 using GPS driver V3.02 414/406 but Pocket Streetmap cannot seem to access any GPS data from the bluetooth.
Any help getting this to work will be much appreciated. |

Hi Tim,
to the forum.
Your problem is probably due to the TT GPS Driver. Versions after 2.07 tend to hijack the Bluetooth and stop other programs like Pocket Street Map from using the BT GPS receiver.
If you remove the 3.02 driver (twice), soft reset the PDA and then install the TT GPS 2.07, which can be downloaded from this website. Then you may be able to use Pocket Street Map

Thank you for your help,
I've done what you said and have made progress!
Pocket streetmap does now appear to be getting (some) data from the wireless bluetooth but it has not yet managed a fix on all the satalites, the best I have done is GPS: Recv [6/7].
I guess it needs a better signal, perhaps I will try a trip in the car.
Do you know of any settings within Pocket Streetmap that would help?
I don't think it will give me a fix on the map untill it gets [7/7].
Many Thanks.

Hi Tim,
I’m glad that my advice helped. I’ve never used Pocket Streetmap, but if you’re getting at least 4 satellites then you should have enough for a 3D fix with the software.
Are you getting far more satellites when using TTNav, in the same location?

With your help and a little tinkering I have managed to get Pocket Streetmap working and very good it is too.
I recomend you give the demo a try as it is far better detailed than the TTnav map.
After switching the driver like you told me and then changing the GPS NMEA string to use $GPSGGA (position + Sat data) it worked.
Thanks again for your Input this just goes to show how useful the Internet is and how good the gadgets are getting.
Thanks

Pocket Streetmap isn't aimed at the same market sector as TT and other navigation apps. It is an electronic version of paper maps and A-Zs, it has no navigation functions for example.
Also because the maps are not vector based but are instead bitmap so consume much more space, the entire Uk would be Gb's worth. This is why they are downloaded on demand from the internet.
It makes a great solution for walking around a strange city but I can't see much other use for it? _________________ Darren Griffin |

What you said is indeed true, I used Tomtom to get to a nice tourist spot in the Chiltern Hills, and in map mode there was nothing there except the road and a path and green to represent the wood.
When i switched to Pocket Streetmap I could see right of way paths boundries Pubs everything because it is an OS map. The cache is 20 MB which holds a lot of map data.
I installed all the tomtom maps at 101 MB which is the whole of mainland GB. Pocket streetmap has 3 levels of detail so three maps of GB.
They do indeed serve two different purposes. But equally good for the jobs I will be doing with them.
in a word QUALITY.

I'm not knocking them, the map data they use is the same available in products such as Memeory-Map, for off-road use i.e. walking etc Memory-Map's 1:50000 and 1:25000 maps are superb. _________________ Darren Griffin |
